Milling atmosphere affected surface morphology and functional groups of ball-milled biochars.N2 and vacuum atmosphere was more favorable for reducing biochar size than air.N2 and vacuum atmosphere inhibited the introduction of O-moieties to biochar surface.External surface adsorption strongly affected the removal of reactive red by ball-milled biochars.

In this study, biochars were ball milled in a planetary mill to investigate the effect of atmosphere (air, N2, and vacuum) on physicochemical properties and pollutant removal capacities of resulted ball-milled biochars. Ball milling turned granular biochars into nanosized particles and increased their surface area (SA) from 2.60-343m2 g1 to 300452m2 g1. Oxygen-limited atmosphere (N2 and vacuum) was more favorable for reducing biochar size than air atmosphere. Decrease of particle size increased external surface area of biochar produced at 450C (HC450), so SA of ball-milled biochars produced in N2 (BMHC450-N) and vacuum (BMHC450-V) was higher than that produced in air (BMHC450-A). However, for biochar produced at 600C (HC600), smaller particle size also caused severe agglomeration, thus BMHC600-N and BMHC600-V had smaller SA than BMHC600-A. Apart from morphology, atmosphere also affected the formation of surface functional groups. N2 and vacuum inhibited the introduction of O-moieties to HC450 during milling process with the decrease of CO to 2.783.02%. Ball milling increased the removal capacity of biochars to reactive red from 1.703.60 mgg1 to 9.2034.8mgg1. Compared to air atmosphere, N2 and vacuum were superior for the enhanced removal due to higher external SA and less negative charge, facilitating the external diffusion of reactive red. Overall, both morphology and surface functional groups of ball-milled biochars were strongly affected by milling atmosphere, influencing their ability to remove contaminants.

The PM 100 planetary ball mill is a benchtop unit designed to pulverize soft, fibrous and brittle materials. The mill develops extremely high centrifugal forces resulting in energy input that is up to 50% higher than in other planetary ball mills. It has a single grinding station for grinding jars with a nominal volume of 12 to 500 mL and can achieve a final fineness of <1 m. The unit can store up to 10 combinations of speed, grinding time and interval settings for use with repetitive grinding tasks. All relevant data can be entered or called up via the multi-language graphic menu interface with one-button operation. The PM 100's offers automatic grinding chamber ventilation for grinding with solvents. Extraction fan exchanges air at a per hour rate more than 20 times the chamber volume.The single station mill features a counterweight that can be adjusted on an inclined guide rail. The counterweight allows for compensation when using the different size grinding jars with differing centers of gravity and avoiding oscillations of the machine. PM 100 can accommodate two stacked grinding jars.The "comfort" range of grinding jars has been designed for extreme working conditions such as long-term trials, wet grinding, high mechanical loads, and maximum speeds as well as for mechanical alloying.
