Antofagasta Minerals (AMSA) is one of the worlds largest copper producers. Bechtel built the original copper concentrator at Chile's Los Pelambres Mine, located approximately 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Santiago, between 1996 and 1999. Bechtel's fourth Los Pelambres project, the Repower II expansion, increased the concentrator's capacity by 20 percent from 132,000 metric tons per day to 159,000 metric tons per day.

The concentrator expansion includes the addition of a grinding line with a SAG mill and a ball mill, a flotation line and the expansion of the existing stockpile to increase throughput by 40,000 tonnes per day.

The project includes awater system with a 106-gallon per second (400 liters per second) desalinated water production system, a 40-mile (65 kilometers) and24-inchdesalinated water transport system with one pumping station and the upgrade of an existing 32-inchreclaim water system.

One of AMSA's main focuses is water efficiency, specifically to reduce continental water consumption and increase seawater usage. To transport water from the ocean to the site, Bechtel is building a desalination plant and pipeline that will also benefit the existing operation in cases of prolonged or severe drought, a marine intake structure and electrical substations to supply power to the water pipeline. Once finished, Los Pelambres water treatment facilities will filter 106 gallons (400 liters) of water per second. This expansion project obtained Chile's first certified green loan for its construction.

Bechtel's work in Los Pelambres has contributed to fulfilling another of AMSA's focuses of promoting local employment, achieving that 58 percent of the project's employees are from the Coquimbo region, where the works are located. They are joined by numerous local general services, hotels, transport and food companies, which have been able to benefit as providers of the project.

DRA Global says it has completed its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract under budget and ahead of time for Northern Star Resources at the Jundee gold mine, near Wiluna, Western Australia.

Jundees processing circuit comprises a two-stage crushing circuit, SAG and ball mill, and conventional carbon-in-leach plant. The ball mill upgrade, undertaken by DRA, increased processing plant capacity to a nominal design throughput rate of 2.7 Mt/y, from 2.2 Mt/y.

Delivery of the project required overcoming challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, including risk mitigation strategies being initiated to maintain the accelerated project schedule, according to the company.

Northern Stars General Manager Processing, Simon Tyrrell, said DRA had consistently met and exceeded performance expectations through a collaborative approach to the Jundee ball mill project delivery.

DRA was engaged on the EPCM contract after having completed an engineering and cost study which included scope definition, design, planning, capital and operating cost estimation. The project follows several previous plant upgrades and studies successfully completed by DRA at the Jundee gold mine, which have contributed towards the continuous production growth seen at the mine over the last four-to-five years, DRA said.

The process plant shutdown and tie-in of the new ball mill was performed in conjunction with the Northern Star operations team and contractors without incident, and the process plant has since ramped up to run consistently above nameplate design capacity, the company added.

Cement producers are required to measure and report to government agencies about the air that flows up the cement mill stack. The value of airflow in m3/hr can be back calculated using the mill diameter and media fill level to a velocity over the mill internals. However, the disadvantage of this method is that it also includes any false air that enters the mill system after the mill exit, through the mill seals, leaking sample points, air slides and the bag filter. If the mill is not well maintained, then this excess air can add up to quite a large amount.

It is preferable to measure the air velocity entering the mill inlet using a simple hand-held anemometer. This will indicate the actual air flowing into the mill and will discount the impact of false air. Some allowance does need to be made for any additional air that may enter either with the raw materials or back from the re-circulating load. Depending on the mill configuration, this can be anywhere from 25-100% additional air flow.

In older mill systems, the mill inlet is often closed off, so it is not possible to measure the velocity directly. In these cases, you need to look for other clues. One simple test is to compare the mill outlet Blaine fineness with that of the mill filter dust. If the mill airflow is optimal, then the Blaine of the mill filter dust should be no more than 1000 Blaine greater than at the mill exit. If it is any finer, this indicates that the airflow is only sufficient to remove the lightest, finest particles from the mill and is therefore lower than optimum.

However, there is often no easy access to sample the mill filter dust. In such a case, one option is to take a sample from the base of the filter following a crash stop. In older mills, wear on the mill outlet seals can lead to a progressive and often unnoticed increase in false air, with a consequential reduction of actual ventilation through the mill.

A simple check for the degree of false air is to compare the mill cement exit temperature with the mill gas exit temperature. As the cement and gas leave through the mill exit at the same temperature in a well-sealed system, the difference in these two temperatures will be only a few degrees. If the temperature difference is in excess of 10C, then this is an indication of excessive false air. Note: The gas temperature will never be higher than the cement temperature. If it is, then one of the probes is located incorrectly or is simply not working. In such a case, ask for a manual temperature check to be done in both locations.
