average washing machine and dryer weight (with 40 examples) - prudent reviews

According to BestBuy.com, regular-sized washers fall between 3 and 4 cubic feet and can hold up to 16 pounds of laundry. Extra-large washers often have over 5 cubic feet of capacity and can hold 20 pounds of laundry, or more.

They are often used in small apartments and lofts and are especially popular in Europe and Asia. Their obvious advantage is that theyre compact and can fit in small spaces. But, despite their smaller size, they are 50 pounds heavier than top-loading washing machines (185 vs. 135 lbs.) on average.

Also, washing machines have several other heavy components. As outlined in this HowStuffWorks article, most washers have two steel tubs (inner and outer), a gearbox, a motor, and a solid metal frame. When were talking about machines that are around 40 inches tall, 28 inches wide and 33 inches deep, thats a lot of metal!

If your washer doesnt have a self-cleaning cycle, fill the drum with hot water and bleach and let it soak for an hour. Then run a full wash cycle. If the drum smells like bleach after, rerun it with just water.

If you dont know what youre doing, stop right here and talk to a professional. It will take a plumber, electrician, or HVAC pro a matter of minutes to get the job done. Itll cost you a little bit but, if youre clueless, its worth it.

Drape handrails with furniture pads in case you bump into them and cover the floor with cardboard in any areas you think you might need to put down the appliance to rest (the bottom or top of the stairs are great spots for this).

Position the dolly in the back or the side of the washer or dryer. Most professionals recommend the side to avoid the cords and tubes that are located in the back, but more importantly, position the dolly so that the weight is balanced and you have complete control.

Tilt the dolly back so that the dolly to bears the majority of the weight. It shouldnt be tipped so far back that it feels like your carrying the appliance, but it also shouldnt be so upright that it feels like its going to tip forward.

Helpful Resource: Check out this article from Dolly.com to find more helpful tips on moving heavy washers and dryers. It includes special tips for moving these appliances up and down staircases, loading them onto a truck, and storing them safely.

The first option is to hire professional movers. Generally, moving companies charge by the total weight of the job or by the hour. Adding two appliances to the packing list wont make much of a difference cost-wise. Dont believe me? Get free quotes from local moving companies in minutes on HomeAdvisor.com.

The second option is to leave your washer and dryer behind. Most sellers include the washer and dryer as part of the sale since they are such a hassle to move, and the dimensions may not match up perfectly in the new house. You might even be able to negotiate the price of the appliances into the sale price (with depreciation).

The last option is to move them yourself (with a friend, of course). If you dont have to lug them up or down a long flight of stairs, its not that bad. Just remember to clean, prepare, gather the equipment, and enlist your strongest friend.

the 10 best clothes dryers of 2021

the 10 best clothes dryers of 2021

Pairing your washing machine with an effective dryer is an absolute must. Your clean clothes aren't ready to wear without this large applianceor at least not in a timely manner. Luckily, there's a variety of clothes dryers that can gently tackle everything from your delicates, to your bath towels, and sneakers.

Thanks to modern technology, most of these machines can also dry your clothes in a way that minimizes wrinkles, saves energy, and keeps lint at bay. They come in both gas and electric models. Most full-sized dryers have a capacity around 7.0 cubic feet that can hold your weekly load of whites, unless you opt for a larger capacity model.

The roomy and practical Maytag MED5630HW is a top option for a dryer. This model gives you 7.3 cubic feet of space, and is up to the challenge of thoroughly drying loads large and small, and doing so without creating a ton of extra noise. Its equipped with advanced moisture sensing to ensure that each load is dry without wasting excess energy on a cycle. In addition, a wrinkle prevent setting can continue to tumble the load for up to 150 minutes after it's completed, to minimize ironing time on items like shirts or pants.

Now, this model might not have a steam function or reversible door, but it does have an extra power button and quick dry setting that you'll likely appreciate. Both of these options boost the power of the machine and ensure that laundry day doesn't drag on. You can also opt to purchase a pedestal or stacking kit separately, to give your laundry room some extra storage and floor space. All in all, at a decent price, this Maytag dryer covers the basics and then some, making it our best overall pick.

The Amana NED4655EW marries a good price point with valuable features. This budget clothes dryer isnt the fanciest model on the market, but includes settings that make it easy and efficient to dry your laundry.

The 6.5-cubic-foot drum isnt the largest capacity dryer on the market, but offers plenty of room for average-sized loads. In addition, an auto-dry sensor ensures each cycle only lasts as long as necessary to get your clothes dry. Plus, there's an optional wrinkle prevention setting, which will save you time with your ironing board, and make sure your shirts and pants are ready-to-wear upon coming out of the dryer.

If youre in the market for an electric dryer, remember that youll need a 220/240V outlet to plug your machine in to. Electric dryers require extra voltage to generate heat, along with power the controls and turn the drum. Many spaces and laundry rooms are already equipped for an electric dryer, so you may have no issues with installing this eye-catching model that offers easy loading, a range of cycles, and quiet operation.

Most notably, the LG DLE7300WE has a dual-opening door that can be opened hamper-style or to the side, depending on your preference or the configuration of your washing machine. Some people like opening it hamper style to prevent any clothes from falling on the floor, or to use it as a place to quickly fold a small load of clothes. In addition, the eight drying cycles and options are easy to use, and a FlowSense Duct Clogging indicator helps to ensure that lint doesnt linger in your vent system and impair dryer performance.

The LG Electronics DLGX4001W will check off many of your boxes, if you're not only looking for a gas dryer, but also one that's very functional. This appliance is stackable, equipped with a steam function, and can be controlled by other smart devices like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Not to mention, its drum has a total of 7.4 cubic feet of space, meaning it can handle a ton of clothes, sheets, or towels at once.

Of course, there's always a learning curve with laundry, as you may ask yourself regularly what setting your load should go on. This machine eliminates all of that guesswork, by using AI technology to select the appropriate settings. On its own, it'll select the best drying motions and temperature for the type of fabric in a load, assuming you pick the "sensor dry" setting. The model also features settings for bedding, delicates, and sanitizing. When a cycle is done, remove everything with ease, as it has a reversible door with a tempered glass window that won't easily get scratched.

By design, dryers require a fair bit of energy to operate. Between generating hot air, and tumbling a drum to take your clothes from drippy to dry, consuming a lot of energy is inevitable. But, you can offset some of the energy costs by choosing an energy-efficient dryer like the Electrolux EFME627UTT. This traditional vented clothes dryer will fit the needs of most households, despite using a heat pumpwhich sometimes gets a bad rap for not thoroughly drying clothes.

This dryer is part of a very energy-efficient washer and dryer duo and is Energy Star certified. This unit uses about 600 kWh, according to the Energy Star rating. Some of the features that will make a difference in your everyday routine include a 15-minute fast dry setting, that lets you dry smaller loads of clothes quickly and thoroughly without extended cycle times. In addition, an eco mode minimizes the energy consumption without sacrificing the dryers performance.

If youre tight on space, the LG WKEX200HBA is a great solution. It combines a washer and dryer into a single unit, and allows you to control both via a central control panel. Unlike other laundry centers, you'll notice the doors are both front-loading, which makes it easy to operate. In addition, the unit can be used alongside the LG ThinQ app, which helps you select cycles or save your very own presets.

When it comes to the dryer, you're certainly not limited on space. The stainless steel drum has 7.4 cubic feet of space, which is plenty for tumbling king-sized sheets or even a comforter. Now, if you do want to tumble a bulkier item, be prepared to run a quick touch-up cycle to tackle any damp spots. If you leave a freshly-dried load in the dryer for a bit, also be prepared to find your machine running again, as the dryer will occasionally re-tumble the clothes for up to three hours after the cycle has completed. This is how the machine prevents wrinkles from forming, while still offering a compact build that's great for small laundry rooms or closets.

The stackable Samsung DVE45R6100P doesnt skimp on features, functionality, or style. While you can position it next to your existing washing machine, it's also able to stack on top of its matching washerthe Samsung WF45R6100AP. It has the option to be put on a matching pedestal, for easy access to the 7.5-cubic-foot drum. You can make use of its reversible door too, which can swing open toward your washer or away from it, depending on the layout of your home and what's a more convenient system for you.

This model has many thoughtful amenities like that, that take it to the next level. For example, there's a steam function that'll rid your clothes of any wrinkles, as well as a lint indicator so you know when to clean the tray. It's able to dry a load of clothes to completion the first time around, meaning you won't need to run a touch-up cycle even when dealing with hard-to-wash items, such as pillows and stuffed animals. The very quiet operation of this appliance may make you forget it's running at times. However, quirky music will play when it's done and ready to be unloaded.

For a supersized dryer, look no further than the Whirlpool WED8120HW. With one look inside the drum, you will instantly feel confident that there are very few loads this dryer cant handle. This model has a total of 8.8 cubic feet of space for towels, blankets, clothes, and comforters. But, notably, it also has three sensors that ensure your clothes are dried properly. They recognize the amount of moisture in your load, and adjust how long the cycle lasts accordingly.

In addition, this model is able to turn into a smart model with a connected app subscription. You can run the sanitize cycle to eliminate a majority of common bacteria from your clean clothes, and steam cycle to tackle wrinkles right from the get-go. Finally, this model features a reversible door and interior light so you can get to your clothes with total ease.

Get a helping hand with your laundry when you choose a smart clothes dryer. The GE GFD85ESPNDG is part of a smart duo, but brings its intelligent features to any laundry set-up. It works with Amazon Alexa as well as Google Assistant, and a smartphone app that allows you to monitor cycles wherever you are.

Although this model can be noisy at times, it also has a reversible door, 7.8-cubic-foot drum, and stackable design to make your laundry experience as streamlined as possible. Along with a stacking kit, you can pair it with its matching washer. You can also make use of its steam function and sanitize setting to tackle both wrinkles and bacteria in your clothes. Are you typically in a rush? Run a quick dry cycle to have your clean clothes in under 23 minutes. It's that easy.

For a portable dryer that delivers plenty of heat no matter where you are, the GE DSKP333ECWW is the best option. This model is designed with saving space in mind. The 3.6-cubic-foot dryer is mounted on caster wheels, which makes it easy to roll in and out of closets, or from one room to another.

While its only able to dry about half of a regular-sized load, it does so thoroughly and conveniently. It channels the hot air through the rear of the drum and out the exhaust pipe in the front, ensuring that the air passes through the clothes inside. This makes a big difference in the efficiency of this portable dryerespecially if you compare it to others on the market. Whether you're installing it in a RV or an apartment, you'll likely think that it's a gem. Just be sure to plug it into a standard 120V outlet. The model is very quiet, so you dont need to worry about finding an out-of-the-way place to hide the machine.

Those who are looking to make laundry day easier and more efficient can't go wrong with our overall pick, the Maytag MED5630HW (view at Home Depot). It's easy to use, and features advanced moisture sensing and an extra power button. If you're hoping to spend less, the Amana NED4655EW (view at Walmart) is a quality pick, too. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of other models, including a large capacity drum, but will certainly get the job done.

Clothes dryers are either powered by electricity or gas. The best option for your household depends on your budget, and where you're installing the appliance. Depending on the brand, a gas dryer can cost a bit more than an electric one, especially since it requires a professional installation. However, the perk of spending more upfront is that your machine will be more gentle on your clothes, and be more cost-efficient to run, making it a great option for large households. In comparison, an electric dryer is easier to install and costs a bit less upfront, but does require a 240-volt outlet.

The capacity of a clothes dryer is measured in cubic feet, and determines how much laundry you're able to dry at one time. Capacity can range anywhere from 3.0 cubic feet in portable units, to nearly 9.0 cubic feet in high-capacity ones. The average capacity of a clothes dryer is 7.3 cubic feet, which can comfortably hold a king-sized comforter, in addition to some sheets. When thinking about what capacity works best for you, consider the size of your washer. A full load in a 5.2-cubic-foot washer can easily fit into a 7.3-cubic-foot dryer, and won't come out damp.

Like washers, clothes dryers can have a steam function that helps to reduce wrinkles and sanitize your clothes. In models with this function, steam is released into the drum during the cycle, adding moisture into the fabrics. Although this function adds moisture, it doesn't delay the drying process, and ultimately leaves your clothes feeling fresher. A steam function is usually found in more pricey models, but can be helpful if you want to quickly freshen clothes without running an entire cycle.

A dual-opening door gives you the option to access your dryer two different ways: opening the door hamper-style, or swinging the door to the side. This feature is particularly handy if you dont have a matching washer and dryer set, or have an unconventional laundry room and need your machine to be flexible. Now, this type of door shouldnt be confused with a reversible one, which can be installed to be either left or right opening.

Tempered glass keeps the door of your front-loading washer or dryer from getting scratches or dents. Therefore, this high-end material is great for homes with children, or laundry machines located in a mudroom or closet. Although youll still want to be careful to not chip the paint of your machine, bumping a laundry basket into one of these doors wont create noticeable wear and tear.

On the most basic level, a clothes dryer uses a combination of drum motions and air flow to dry your clothes and prepare them to be worn. Now, how air is circulated depends on if your model is ventless or vented. If your model is vented, then it continuously sources air from outside the machine, pulls it in, and uses either electric coils or gas to heat it. In contrast, if your model is ventless, then it'll pull in the air, heat it, and bring that same air through a heat exchanger to be used again. For more, you can check out our full guide on how a clothes dryer works.

How hot a clothes dryer can get depends on its power source. Typically, an electric clothes dryer will not get as hot as a gas clothes dryer. This type of appliance will take longer to heat up, too, because the electricity has to heat coils that'll heat the air. In addition, the setting you select affects how hot your dryer can get. On high heat, a dryer can reach around 135 degrees Fahrenheit, and on low heat, this number decreases to around 125 degrees Fahrenheit.

To clean a clothes dryer, you'll need rubber gloves, a glass jar, 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach, and water. To start, pull out the lint screen and throw away any lint that's attached. This should be done regularly, so your machine isn't at risk for starting a fire. Then, mix the bleach with one quart of water in the jar. Use a small towel to spread the mixture around the drum and interior of the door. To finish, run the clothes dryer on high heat, making sure to place a couple old towels inside so it's not empty. For more, see our full guide on how to sanitize and disinfect a washer and dryer, as well as how to clean vent ducts.

Like a washer, a clothes dryer should last at least 10 years. You can extend your appliance's lifespan by properly maintaining and cleaning it. Before running a load, remove any lint from the lint screen so the appliance can circulate air easily. Every few months, take time to clean the vent ducts and sanitize the drum, too. In addition, make sure to perform any needed repairs right away, especially if your dryer has gone through flooding. For more, see our guide on how often you should clean your home appliances.

The amount of watts, or energy, your clothes dryer uses can range from 2,000 to 6,000 watts. If you purchase an Energy Star rated model, your dryer will use an average of 3,500 watts. Many factors go into this measurement, including the power source your dryer requires, the capacity of your machine, and whether it's vented or ventless. To find how many watts your clothes dryer uses, check your user manual. Then, check out our guide on how to calculate the cost of running your dryer to see how that number translates in your bills.

best clothes dryers in 2021 | tom's guide

best clothes dryers in 2021 | tom's guide

The best clothes dryers will sap the moisture from your clothes while also making sure they stay soft, fluffy, and free of wrinkles. There's no need to worry about shrinking, overheating, or the horror of seeing your energy bills fly off into the stratosphere. But the best part? They're not loud or slow either.

Drying your clothes properly can also help protect your clothes from diseases like COVID-19, provided you wash them at the warmest possible setting and completely dry them without shaking in the air. Then there are the dryers with built-in sanitizing or anti-bacterial cycles.

Deciding on the best clothes dryers is dependent on your circumstances, and how much laundry you do. Budget, location, load size, it all counts. And that's before you consider all the hi-tech features you might want to embrace. But whatever your circumstances, these are the best clothes dryers you can buy right now.

The best clothes dryer for most people is theLG DLEX3570W. It offers superior drying performance, has truly useful features like a sanitizing mode and wrinkle prevention, and doesnt make a racket when its operating. And although it uses steam, it doesnt require a connection to a water pipe.

If youre on a budget, the best choice is the Maytag MEDC465HW. It only comes in white and doesnt have fancy features like steam and a Wi-Fi connection but it will get your clothes dry and even has a sensor to monitor moisture and temperature to prevent your favorite tees from overheating and shrinking up.

We know that for many of you how big a load you can dry at once is a big concern, so several of our top picks have huge drums that can handle a teams worth of towels. For those of you who can afford top dollar and are looking to design an upscale laundry room, we have recommendations for top-of-the-line dryers, with lots of bells and whistles, and that can coordinate with a sophisticated front-loading washer.

One thing to note: We arent recommending any combination washer/dryer models, which wash and dry in a single device. That's because, while they save space, these units tend to be much less reliable as well as a lot less efficient than single purpose machines. Reliability is critical for laundry appliances: Not only do you depend on them every day, but a failure can mean a flood or other home disaster.

The LG DLEX400W is the best clothes dryer overall. With its large capacity and a dozen drying cycles, it can handle everything from lacy camisoles to a comforter the size of New Hampshire. It knows exactly when to end the drying process, thanks to built-in moisture sensors, so it wont be overheating your clothes. If you choose Wrinkle Care, it will periodically tumble your clothes without heat until you remove them from the dryer, preventing creases from setting in.

On the LG youll find one steam mode to remove wrinkles and another to both sanitize and remove odors. The steam feature doesn't require a permanent water connection either; you fill a pull-out container on the front of the dryer with water as and when you need it. You can also monitor and control this dryer remotely using the LG ThinQ app, as well as Alexa and Google Assistant. Available in white or graphite, it can be mounted on a pedestal to match a front-loading washer.

Only available in white with dial controls and without a window in the door, this basic dryer offers good performance but wont dress up your laundry room. However, it does have a sensor to monitor moisture and air temperatures and a Wrinkle Control option to keep clothes tumbling after theyve dried so that crinkles dont become permanent. But at this price theres no steam, no sanitize, no apps, and no little tunes to let you know when things are done. Reviewers did find that it ran a little hot, which could be an issue with delicate fabrics.

The EFME627UTT is the best clothes dryer for those looking for an effective steam cycle to prevent wrinkles as it dries or do a quick fresh up to remove wrinkles and odors. Its the companion dryer to the Electrolux EFLS627UTT, our top pick for a washing machine. Reviewers praised this dryer's performance, saying that it efficiently dried even large loads. While a few found that it took longer to dry than similarly-priced models, it also dries at a lower and therefore gentler temperature. At this price, it is surprising that it lacks smart-home features.

When youre in a hurry to get your Little Leaguers uniform dried, there is a 15-minute quick-dry cycle designed for small loads. Reviewers also liked the efficient double-sided lint filter. You can opt to stack this model on top of a washer or install it on a pedestal to pair with a front-loading washer. It comes in white or titanium.

TheGE GTD65EBSJWS is one of the best clothes dryers you can buy if youre looking to economize.Just dont expect this basic white model to add any pizazz to your laundry room. While it doesnt have steam, it does have moisture sensors and a feature to prevent wrinkling.

One thing that reviewers note is that this GE tends to leave clothes very slightly damp. This seems to be a deliberate decision, with the designers preferring that it under-dry rather heat them for too long and risk damaging or shrinking them. If youre one of those people who likes to iron everything right out of the dryer, youll love the alert that that lets you know when your clothes are still damp so you wont have to spritz them as you iron.

A cavernous 9 cu. ft. drum makes theLG DLEX9000V the best clothes dryer for large families. Its the companion piece to the LG WM9000HVA, our pick for the best washer with an enormous capacity. This dryers large size combined with 14 cycles makes it an incredibly flexible machine that that can handle small or humongous loads with equally impressive performance. Among its most useful features are its two steam cycles, a 10-minute wrinkle remover, and a sanitizing mode thats great for drying bedding after everyone in the house has been sick.

This is also one of the few dryers with smart-home features: Download the LG SmartThinQ app and monitor and control it from your smartphone. You can also give it orders via Alexa or Google Assistant. Available in a graphite finish and able to sit on a pedestal to match a front-loading washer, this machine is definitely a major upgrade for your laundry room.

Looking for a clothes dryer that is smarter than average? TheSamsung DVE50R8500V/A3is our top pick for a clothes dryer with smart home controls. Like most of Samsung's appliances, its as easy to control with Samsung'sSmartThingsas with its on-board controls.Samsung's app lets you monitor the drying process, so you can see how long the cycle has to run, and then pings you when the load is dry. Unfortunately, there isn't an app to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer for you: perhaps the next generation.

On this machine youll find a vent sensor to alert you when you have to clean the exhaust vent as well as a lint filter indicator that lights up when the lint basket needs to be emptied. You can get this luxury dryer in white or black stainless steel and either stack it or mount it on a riser to coordinate with a washer that loads from the front.

Gas or Electric? This choice will usually be made for you by which connection is available in your basement or laundry room. Most dryers use electricity as a power source, but you can't just plug them into a standard socket. Instead, they need a specially wired, two-phase 220-volt socket that can handle more power than your standard wall socket. We've focused on electric models for this guide, but the manufacturers usually offer a similar gas option: check their site for details.

Venting In addition to a power source, dryers will also require an air vent for the hot air they push out. Again, this will often limit where you can put the dryer, as you need to keep the connection to this vent as short as possible. This vent also should not be curved or bent, as corners provide a place for lint to gather, which can pose a fire risk.

Will it fit? If you are planning on putting your washer and dryer into a small space or under a counter, make sure that you measure the space to make sure it will fit. Most dryers are front-loaders, but many also put the controls on the top, so they won't work under a standard worktop.

The National Association of Home Builders says that a clothes dryer has a lifespan of about 13 years, yet you'll rarely see warranties for more than a year. Extended warranties generally cost more than the repairs they cover, so we recommend skipping the common upsell.

When the cost of a repair is fifty percent or more than the price of a new dryer, you should consider shopping for a replacement. Some of the signs that you may be in for a major repair are thumping or clanging noises, lack of heat, or a malfunctioning control panel. Also look out for a failure to start or a tendency to shut off in the middle of a cycle. A burning smell may or may not indicate the need for an expensive repair, but it could mean theres a risk of fire so it definitely means you should call for a service visit.

There are definite advantages to newer models. Any Energy Star certified dryer uses 20% less energy and saves you about $215 during its lifetime, making it frugal as well as environmentally friendly.

Other energy-saving features include moisture sensors that detect how damp your clothes are and end the cycle when the load is dry. Cycles that use steam to get rid of wrinkles and reduce static, others that sanitize to get rid of germs, and ones tailored to small loads are now common. For safety, some dryers alert you when the lint filter needs to be emptied or even when the duct is blocked. New dryers even prevent unwanted creases by keeping clothes tumbling without heat instead of letting them sit until you remove a finished load.

Increasingly, dryers are equipped with WiFi, allowing you to see the progress of your load on your mobile device and control the cycle from your phone or Alexa or Google Assistant. Connected dryers may even be able to diagnose problems and in some cases, alert the manufacturer's service center so that the repair person can bring the right part on the first visit and eliminate a second one.

Anyone with a lot of kids knows how quickly laundry can pile up. If you're tired of your free time being dominated by household busywork, you might want to consider upgrading your washer and dryer. To cut down on the need for running multiple dryer cycles, consider looking at high-capacity dryers. While you can easily buy a high-capacity washer and dryer as a set, if you're just looking to replace your dryer, we can recommend plenty of dryers that have drums large enough to fit more than your average load of laundry. However, for a dryer to make this list, it not only has to have a larger capacity, but it also has to be able to dry your laundry quickly; what good is a bigger dryer if you still end up having to run it repeatedly because that big pile of wet laundry you tossed in is still damp? Our favorite high-capacity dryer is the 8.8-cu.-ft. Maytag MED8230 (available at AppliancesConnection for $1,244.00), which has a strong drying performance, as well as a number of useful extra features. Our favorite high-capacity dryer is the 8.8-cu.-ft. Maytag MED8230 (available at AppliancesConnection for $1,244.00), which has a strong drying performance, as well as a number of useful extra features.

Of all the laundry dryers weve tested at Reviewed over the years, the Maytag MED8230HC is one of the best. Its massive 8.8-cubic-foot drum is large enough to accommodate a family of any size. Its cycles run quickly and get laundry loads 100% dry. Its also covered by one of the best warranties in the industry.

Hi there! We're Reviewed's appliance testing team. Between the three of us (Jon Chan, Kyle Hamilton, and Julia MacDougall), we've spent many years testing major appliances including washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, and robot vacuum cleaners.

We have plenty of experience testing these products in the lab, but we've also used them like normal people would in the course of their daily lives, which means that we have a great sense for what appliances are bargains at their price points, and which appliances have really useful extra features (as opposed to the kitchen-sink approach to features).

With all this in mind, you can feel confident that when we recommend a product, we're giving it our Reviewed stamp of approval, which means two things: firstly, this appliance performs well, and secondly, this appliance is easy to use. We're always reviewing new products, so stay tuned for our reviews and roundups of the latest products in laundry, refrigerators, dishwashers, and vacuum cleaners.

Beyond these performance tests, we also assess the usability of each dryer, based on our experience, both during testing and during more casual use (one perk of working at Reviewed is that there is plenty of laundry machines on premises!). Our main goal is to get the answer to one question: how easy is it to actually use this dryer? This involves cumulatively assessing the control panel, the door, the vent, and any smart features that are included.

When we recommend a dryer as one thats good for large families, were mostly looking at that dryers capacity. A dryers interior is rated in cubic feet, and the higher the number is, the more wet laundry you can fit into the dryer.

The average washing machine has a drum capacity between 7.3 cu. ft. to 7.5 cu. ft. With this dryer size, you can dry a family of fours weekly laundry load. When you have a larger family, however, chances are that youll have bigger and more frequent laundry loads; in this case, we look for dryers that have capacities with a minimum of 8.0 cu. ft.

According to the Spruce, you shouldn't overload your dryer with wet clothes; the wet laundry should max out at about 2/3 of the space in your dryer. For an 8.0 cu. ft. dryer, that translates into about 5.3 cu. ft. of wet laundry, which is about 1.5 times more than the amount a normal family of four generates in a week. Chances are, if you have a large capacity washer, then you'll need a dryer that can keep up with an increased laundry load.

The largest dryer on our list, the Maytag MEDB955FC, boasts a capacity of 9.2 cu. ft., which can take a laundry load of about 6.1 cu. ft., should be able to dry any laundry load that the Kenmore Elite 31633, the largest washer we've ever tested, can fit in a single cycle. According to Kenmore's website, that's about 30 bath towels into a single load. Clearly, if you have lots of kids and adults in a single household, you'll need a dryer that can properly dry whatever size laundry load your large capacity washer can fit.

Another spec that makes a dryer good for large families is cycle time. Sometimes, even with large capacity dryer like the ones listed here, youre still going to be running multiple cycles of laundry in a given day; its best for everyone if those cycles dont take too long.

Youd think that more wet laundry would automatically translate into longer dryer cycle times, since, you know, theres more laundry to dry. However, some brands have come up with ways to efficiently dry large laundry loads fairly quickly, without over-drying the laundry load. For example, Electrolux's LuxCare Dry System is able to sense humidity in clothes without touching them, which means that the Electrolux EFME627UTT can get all of your clothes dry, rather than just the ones that touch a sensor and tell the machine it's still wet. The Normal cycle on that Electrolux dryer takes about 96 minutes, and according to our tests, removes 100% of the moisture in a normal laundry load.

The Electrolux EFME627UTT dryer is great-looking, has simple controls, and is rich with cycles and options, including Perfect Steam, which can help to relax any wrinkles away. Its Quick Dry cycle completes in a mere 15 minutes. Though the Normal cycle is slow, the Heavy cycle takes only an hour. While cycle times may vary, we found that the Normal and Delicates cycles both got our test loads 100% dry, and that temperatures never got hot enough to start damaging clothes. The Electrolux EFME627UTT represents the perfect balance between cycle times and cycle temperatures.

As the counterpart to the stellar Electrolux EFLS627UTT washing machine that has a spot in the detergent drawer for laundry pods, this dryer is another great addition to the Electrolux laundry family.

The LG DLEX9000V isn't just gorgeousit works better than most dryers we've tested, and got the laundry in the Normal and Bulky cycles 100% dry. It doesn't come cheap, but it rocks best-in-class features, including steam cycles and a massive 9.0-cubic-foot capacity. Another bonus is FlowSense, which tells you when something is wrong with your ventilation (rather than with the dryer itself). Since dryer fires are a major cause of fires in the home, this awesome feature will really help to put your mind at ease, especially if it's been a while since your dryer vent has been cleaned.

With a veritable cornucopia of wash cycle options and features, this dryer can easily deal with a variety of fabric types and items sizesit has no trouble with big items like comforters, and gets shirts wrinkle-free. Even though it's a big investment, we say its performance justifies the cost, so if you need a powerful yet sleek dryer and have some extra cash on hand, be sure to check out the LG DLEX9000V.

The Electrolux EFME527UTT dryer is great-looking, easy to control, and full of cycles and options. Like the Electrolux EFME627UTT, it has the detergent drawer for laundry pods and Perfect Steam, which is powered by its built-in water heater to maximize hot water temperatures for sanitizing, wrinkle removal, static removal, and odor removal.

Its Quick Dry cycle finishes in a mere 18 minutes, which is a huge selling point. While not every cycle is as short as Quick Dry, each cycle is effective at drying wet clothes without raising the temperature to extremes high enough to damage fabric. If you want both the bells and whistles and the great dryer performance, look no further than the Electrolux EFME527UTT.

For families that generate a lot of laundry, the Maytag MEDB955FC dryer has the room for it. With its 9.2-cubic-foot capacity, there's plenty of room for you to put in your king size comforters; the best part is that they come out totally dry and fluffy.

Admittedly, the cycle times are on the longer side: The Normal cycle took about an hour and 40 minutes, while the Bedding cycle that dried that comforter was only a few minutes shorter. Rapid Dry, though, is a real treat, and almost completely dried a small load of laundry in 14 minutes, which is nothing to sneeze at. With its recessed door handle, magnetic door, and big, easy-to-read control dials, the Maytag MEDB955FC is designed to be easily operated with one hand, presumably while you shepherd kids or pets around with the other hand.

The Kenmore 69133 dryer is a solid dryer that can get most laundry loads dry in about an hour. While this dryer didn't get any of our test loads 100% dry in a single cycle, it performed pretty well on the Normal cycle, where the load was almost entirely dry at the end of the 54-minute-long cycle.

Despite its imperfect drying, this dryer is still a great pick for large families because of a number of convenient extra features: Wrinkle Guard, which keeps tumbling your laundry after the cycle's over to prevent wrinkles from setting in, Sanitize, which can kill household bacteria and germs, and Touch Up, which uses a bit of steam to refresh lightly-soiled clothing so that they can be worn again without chucking them in the washing machine. If you want a dryer with steam features, but don't want to pay top dollar, check out the Kenmore 69133 dryer.

The 9.0 cu. ft. Kenmore Elite 81983 is chock-full of features that are bound to make your life as a parent easier. Not only is the this dryer big enough to handle whatever laundry load your washing machine can dish out, but most of the drying cycles only take about an hour. The Normal cycle was able to get our standard laundry load 100% dry in about 67 minutes.

The 81983 also has multiple steam cycles for aiding in de-wrinkling and refreshing musty linens. The neatest feature, though, is Static Shield, which lightly sprays your laundry with water so as to reduce static cling (and the likelihood that you'll get zapped when you do laundry in dry weather). If you want total control over the drying process, the Kenmore 81983 is the dryer for you.

what size washer is considered large capacity?

what size washer is considered large capacity?

Generally speaking, 4 cubic feet is enough to wash 12-16 pounds of laundry. A larger capacity unit at 4.5 cubic feet can hold up to 20 pounds of laundry. A general rule of thumb is a queen size comforter can fit into 3.5 cubic feet and a king size comforter fit into a 3.8 cubic feet machine.

One may also ask, what size is a large capacity dryer? Larger Dryers If the most important factor in the dimension of your dryer is drying capacity, the bigger the dryer the better. Some large-capacity dryers offer up to 7 cubic feet of interior drying space, while standard dryers average approximately 4 cubic feet.

How to Calculate the Cubic Feet of a Washer Measure the depth inside the washer with a measuring tape. Measure the diameter of the tub. Divide the diameter by two, and square it. Multiply the number calculated in Step 3 by the depth of the tub. Multiply the number calculated in Step 4 by pi to determine the capacity.

A standard washing machine is generally 85 cm high x 59-60 cm wide x 50-60 cm deep. Machines of this size are available in a full range of drum capacities, up to 12 kg and sometimes 13 kg. Some smaller models are available, but they have a smaller drum capacity and are harder to find.

10 best large tumble dryers for families 2021: 7-10kg - madeformums

10 best large tumble dryers for families 2021: 7-10kg - madeformums

Investing in a tumble dryer for your family is a big commitment, especially with so many brands out there and at such a range of prices. Every tumble dryer model will have slightly different features and its often hard to work out which is right for your familys needs.

Building on the insight we learned from our survey of households, we then spoke to 2 professional home appliance experts from AO.com and John Lewis to provide detailed advice on exactly what you should be looking for when choosing a tumble dryer.

Combining all of this information and expert insight, we have put together a clear buyers guide to help you choose which tumble dryer is best for your family. Below this guide, we have compiled a suggested list of 10 tumble dryers available to buy now which are suitable for families.

We asked the respondents to our survey what the 3 most important features of a family tumble dryer were. Price, fitting into the available space in their home and energy rating came out as the top considerations. Sensor drying technology (we explain what this means in our guide) and special features were the next most important things valued, followed by the product guarantee.

We took these into consideration when selecting the models for our recommended list. We also made selections based on the advice gained from our AO and John Lewis experts, and have additionally ensured that all the chosen dryers were highly rated by their previous buyers.

One was due to price or being good value for money and the other was being the correct type of machine they needed for their space. (You can get vented, condenser or heat-pump tumble dryers and we explain the differences between these below.).

Vented tumble dryers work by removing moisture from your clothes and expelling it outside of your home through a vent, says Lauren. They come with a long hose to help you do this, but you may need to install it if you want to vent the moisture out through a wall.

This means you dont need a hose for the moisture to escape through. A condenser dryer is therefore useful if your machine wont be next to an existing vent or you arent able to make a hole in your wall, for instance if you are renting.

Big families doing frequent large loads will need a large capacity tumble dryer. If that sounds like your household, you might want to consider a 9kg tumble dryer or even a 10kg tumble dryer, which should fit around 50 t shirts into the drum for a single load.

However, it is worth keeping in mind that its only worth getting an extra large machine if youll be doing big loads very often. If youll only be filling the machine on occasion and using it regularly for smaller loads in between, this is less efficient and could cost more to run in the long term.

The more economical your machine is, the kinder it will be to the environment and your utility bills, explains AOs expert, Lauren Clark. The annual energy cost for one of our A+++ rated machines (based on at 15.40p/unit) is 27.10.

Sensor technology, however, monitors the humidity inside the tumble dryer and stops automatically when the load is dry. This is often available on newer, more advanced models (which may end up being pricier).

How long a machine will last can depend on many things, including how well you care for it. Cleaning out filters and remembering to always empty the drawer of your condenser machine can make a big difference.

If you are experiencing issues with your machine and you believe it is broken, the first thing to do is check if its still within its warranty period before you spend money on a new machine. Lauren recommends contacting the manufacturer to see if they can do anything to repair it.

Weve put together a range of tumble dryers in the list below divided into heat pump, condenser and vented machines. We chose these models based on reviews from previous buyers, those which offer features the 933 family households we surveyed told us were important to them and their suitability for families based on our expert advice and research.

Last year, Whirlpool issued a mass recall on certain models of their Indesit and Hotpoint washing machines, as they were faulty and could potentially pose a risk to households who owned them. Prior to this incident, the company had to do the same to many of their tumble dryers, which were found to be a fire danger.

While Hotpoint tumble dryers were generally popular with those who owned them (67% scored them 8 out of 10 or higher overall), Indesit and Whirlpool owners were less satisfied with their machines than the majority of the other brands discussed in our survey (54% scored them 8 out of 10 or above for both brands).

This machine from Samsung is a 9kg tumble dryer, making it perfect for larger families. It has a handy sensor drying function (something respondents of our survey were interested in) and can even connect to a smartphone app so you can program it remotely from your devices.

Theres an anti-crease function to help lessen the ironing load and a delay timer for up to 19 hours. That means you can schedule the load to finish once youre back from the school run or can have it going overnight to be ready for when you wake up.

Previous buyers of the tumble dryer seemed impressed with one reviewer, who was categorised as a busy parent, saying, Absolutely love this dryer, it dries clothes really quicklyIt has a fantastic range of settings so one for every load no matter what youre drying. Was a little costly but you get what you pay for and it really is worth paying extra.

With its 8kg capacity, its perfect for any medium-sized household and the efficient heat pump technology recycles hot air inside the drum, making it really economical to run, she says. Meanwhile, as its a smart appliance, you can control it from your compatible Android smartphone and you can even download new cycles.

This high-tech Bosch model comes with a full touch LED display and light up controls. There are plenty of functions to choose from like the Easy Start option which allows you to customise the drying cycle from a compatible smartphone app.

The machine even self-cleans the condenser up to 4 times during a single cycle to keep dryer running more efficiently for longer, while anti-vibration technology helps keep the noise levels down while it spins. Theres also a hygiene feature which blasts clothes with additional heat to kill bacteria, without damaging the clothes.

Due to all these additional features, a couple of reviews from previous buyers mentioned the model might require reading the instructions carefully to understand how to make the most of the different functions.

Overall, previous buyers were pleased with the machine. One reviewer said, We particularly like the home connect notifications you can get on your phone or Apple Watch to let you know when your programme has finished because our dryer is not in the kitchen / utility area. The machine gets things properly dry and remarkably crease free.

This Grundig tumble dryer has a useful sensor drying function and should be a good capacity for a small to medium family household. Its also not as deep as other models (54cm in depth) meaning it should be able to fit into tighter spaces in your home.

One reviewer commented, Loads of different cycles, plus a choice of setting a time span instead if required. Things actually come out dry unlike previous machines Ive owned. Light inside the drum is useful [and its] easy to clean the filters and empty the water reservoir. Slightly less deep than standard machines so it fits under the worktop nicely. Looks really sleek and modern.

Beko were a close 3rd for overall performance in our survey, with 66% of Beko tumble dryer owners rating them at least 8 out of 10 or above overall. This model includes the sensor drying feature as well as an anti-crease program to help reduce your ironing pile. Theres also a child lock on the machine and its one of the lowest price big brand choices.

One previous buyer commented, I needed a tumble dryer on a budget. This one exceeded my expectations. The drum is big enough for a family, its rather quiet and I love all the drying options. I do a family wash andits all washed and cupboard dry in a few hours.

Although only 8 households identified their tumble dryer as being made by Miele, 100% of those who owned a Miele machine scored it 8 out of 10 or higher (4 respondents awarded theirs 8 out of 10, 2 scored 9 out of 10 and 2 gave full marks with 10 out of 10).

This 7kg model should suit a small or medium sized family and has lots of handy extra features, such as sensor drying plus anti-crease and minimum iron settings. That should mean clothes are ready to wear faster after drying. The honeycomb designed drum is also supposed to better protect your clothes from damage during a cycle.

One previous buyer said, Its very quiet and much quicker than my previous one. It gives a count down to how long the programme will take, it has a lot more programs to choose from and I find the hand iron settings brilliant; perfect for sheets, linens etc which makes the ironing so much quicker too. Its very straightforward to operate with easy to clean filters. A really excellent product I would definitely recommend it.

This model has a reversible door including 4 options on where you would like the handle to be place, making it a useful choice if you have space confinements in your home. Theres a delay start and easy iron program to help work your laundry into your busy family schedule and a child lock to help keep little ones safer.

In our survey, the majority of families who owned Zanuissi tumble dryers told us they would score theirs 8 out of 10 or more for overall performance (56%). This Zanussi model in particular is a bestseller at John Lewis, where it averages 4.4 out of 5 stars from 244 reviews.

One reviewer said, My last Zanussi dryer lasted 28 years, Im hoping this does the same. This is a well-built machine with a large, seriously vast, capacity. All of which gets dry. It has many functions though no doubt we will only use a few to cater for our needs. I like the large filter which is easy to cleanDelay start is a great feature.

In our survey of 933 households, Hoover was the third most commonly owned. Some 71% of these users rated their Hoover tumble dryer 8 out of 10 or more. This made Hoover the highest-scoring brand (used by 10 or more households) in our survey.

This Hoover model is very reasonably priced considering its capacity as a 10kg tumble dryer and should easily cope with the laundry demands of a large family household. The machine also connects to an app, so you can even control your appliance from your smartphone during the school run..

The dryer also has sensor drying capabilities and will end its cycle once clothes are dry, meaning one less thing to keep an eye on. This model also scored highly in the 272 customer reviews on the AO website, with an average of 4.8 stars out of 5 overall.

This Beko machine is one of the lowest priced machines on the market and still scores well with previous buyers, averaging 4 out of 5 stars in reviews on the Currys website and 4.5 out of 5 stars through buyers at AO.

One reviewer of the model commented, There are lots of settingsonce its finished it does the occasional 5 second spin to remind you its done. Lovely big drum so its easy to get the clothes in and out and the lint collector is quick and easy to clean. Would definitely recommend this tumble dryer.

Candys vented tumble dryer has a 9kg capacity which should suit large families. The mixed drying programme means you dont have to separate different fabrics and can throw everything in together to save time. It also sensor dries and connects to an app which you can download on your smartphone.

One reviewer commented, Very happy with the ease of use and the quality of the drying. Gives options to iron dry or full cotton dry for example. Very good. Also gives 3, 6, 9 hours to start options which is very helpful as we will never leave a dryer working if not at home.
