Medical equipment is subject to very stringent regulations in all phases of development, manufacturing, and use. In terms of dust collection, medical and pharmaceutical manufacturers are subject to regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), among others. By Bill Kurz Even knowledgeable, experienced operators of dust collection equipment sometimes get tunnel vision when it comes to selecting a new piece of equipment. They may be overly influenced by past personal experience or convinced by a salesperson pushing one technology over another. In either case, changing dust collection equipment designs and evolving media technologies make it imperative to avoid automatically assuming any one method of collection is best. It pays to review all of your options.

Heres an example. An experienced engineer, whose powdered metal production facility has operated numerous dust collectors for dozens of years, wanted new collection equipment located indoors to save energy by returning cleaned air to the plant. He specified traditional baghouse technology tubular fabric bags with wire cages because the plant had successfully employed them earlier. The dust collection equipment manufacturer pointed out that the low ceiling in the plant would not accommodate a baghouseit would be too tall to fit. The equipment maker suggested a pleated bag collector as a good alternative.

No way, responded the engineer. We tried those collectors in the past and they didnt work. Our fine dust plugged them, they had a very high differential pressure, and they were a mess to change out.

A pleated bag collector was installed indoors. It works very well, collecting the valuable dust as well as efficiently releasing it to be returned and recovered. An integral HEPA filter was included, allowing recirculation in the plant and energy savings.

Traditional baghouse wisdom often places the dirty air inlet in the hopper, the idea being that heavy dust particles will drop into the hopper without having to be collected first. Thus, when a metals producer went shopping for a collector for mill scale dust, it never considered an alternative, even though its previous collectors were experiencing wear problems from this highly abrasive dust on housings, hoppers and pleated filter bags. Bags were having to be replaced every six months, or less.

To reduce wear, a collector manufacturer suggested a unit with reduced internal velocities, wear cuffs on the bottom of the traditional felted bags and a high inlet classifying section to drop out heavier dust prior to the bag section. The new collector was designed at an air-to.cloth ratio of 4:1 versus 3:1 in previous collectors and an interstitial velocity of 222 fpm versus 520 fpm before.

Before proceeding further, realize that wet scrubbers have limitations. They do not have as high a collection efficiency as dry collectors (baghouse or cartridge filters), and are much more sensitive to variations in air volume, temperature, particle size and inlet loading.

However, when emission regulations are not as strict, a water source is available, and the operator can readily deal with scrubber blowdown (water treatment), wet scrubbers can be very attractive when comparing total purchase and operating costs.

An example can be found at a processor of silica sand. A baghouse designed to handle the hot, moist, dust-laden air (300F, 7.4% water vapor by volume) from its rotary dryer would cost about $75,000 and require a 40 HP fan motor, a 1/2 HP rotary valve drive motor and consume 20 scfm of compressed air while operating.

A stack test indicated that inlet loading and particle size distribution would allow a wet scrubber to meet the EPA emission requirements. Additionally, both capital costs as well as operating costs were projected to be less for a scrubber than for a baghouse. An existing settling pond could provide water as well as accept scrubber discharge.

An emerging trend is the use of a scrubber to avoid the recently-mandated costs of NFPA-68 and NFPA-69 explosion protection regulations for combustible dusts. Under the new regulations, dry collectors require special filter bag construction, explosion vents or suppression, special rotary valves, and inlet duct isolation. This adds significant costs to the installation, and additional maintenance requirements, making scrubbers more attractive. This will be the subject of a future white paper.

A specialty chemical company bought a size reduction mill and a product collector for a new project. Having had previous experience with pleated filter bag media, the engineer wrote a new specification that included pleated bags.

A dust collector manufacturer studied the situation in depth and provided two proposals: one for the requested pleated bag design and one for an alternative conventional tubular bag collector. Even though the initial cost of the conventional filter design was higher, the manufacturer convinced its customer to abandon thoughts of pleated bags.

Why? The chemical company was processing a product that was new to them. The dust collector manufacturer anticipated high material loading and potential release problems for pleated media. In addition, pleated filter life for the chemical was unknown, and the costs of modification to a pleated bag housing were expected to be very high if it didnt meet expectations.

A collector with specially designed felted bags for release of sticky material was supplied, along with a two-year bag life guarantee. The collector has been in operation for nine years with only one bag change out.

The lesson of all four examples is the same: dont assume that a dust collection technology is best for any particular application without seeking unbiased advice from a source knowledgeable in all technologies. There are too many variables involved to select one technology over another without some study.

The dust collector plays different roles in such a system. Additionally, it contributes to the smooth running and maintenance of the blasting equipment by preventing dust and fine particles from damaging critical mechanical parts. Finally, it contributes to the workers health and to maintaining a clean work environment by returning clean, filtered air into the work space.

ISTblast DB13 Dust Bag has a filtration capacity of 13 square feet and may be installed directly on the exhaust system of a sandblasting cabinet. As the sandblast system is switched on, the bag inflates and releases dust build-up from its sides. Dust may then be collected in the dust pail supplied with the system.

Bag-house dust collectors are more effective than the DB13 dust bag. First, the dust cloud is carried far away from the cabinet, but also, the filtration capacity ranges from 50 to 330 square feet. As for the rest, the principle of functioning is very similar. When the system starts, filtering bags (also called sleeves due to their rounded and narrow shape) inflate to allow a small quantity of dust to stick to their sides in order to fill in their pores and give them their optimal filtration capacity. After each use, the filtering bags must be manually or mechanically shaken in order to release excess amounts of dust.Air contaminated with dust is sucked through the filtering bags by means of an impeller powered by an electrical motor.

The impeller can be mounted onto the cabinet (on the dirty side) to push contaminated air towards the dust collector or, oppositely, on the dust collector (on the clean side) in order to suck air from the cabinet. The second configuration considerably increases the performance of the dust collector while extending the life span of the impeller.

Indeed, when the impeller is mounted on the cabinet, it pushes the dust and abrasive media through the impellers turbine, which causes premature wear and limits its ability to convey dust due to restriction. On the other hand, when the impeller is mounted on the clean side dust collector, the turbine doesnt come across friction with neither dust nor abrasive media. The sucking power of the impeller is also enhanced due to the absence of restriction.

Bag-house dust collectors are relatively easy to operate and maintain. Before and/or after each use, filtering bags must be shaken in order to dislodge dust build-up from their sides, and the dust collection container normally located at the bottom of the dust collectors hopper and actionable from a drain valve must be emptied. Some models are equipped with a sieve drawer which traps larger debris. Filtering bags are easily replaceable when they stop performing as they should when the system is unable to evacuate the dust cloud produced by the impact of the media onto the workpiece, or when the system is no longer able to let air circulate normally. We recommend using these dust collection systems for regular industrial users of sandblast cabinets.

Cartridge-type dust collectors are far more efficient than bag-house dust collectors due to their nano fibre filtering cartridges. These dust collectors are equipped with an impeller located on the clean side, powered by an electric motor that can achieve between 2,000 and 50,000 CFM. Each unit can be fitted with 6 to 224 filtering cartridges and can yield a filtration capacity of up to 100,000 cubic feet per minute (pi3/min.). The modular conception of this line allows the bundling of multiple units together in a closed loop system in order to multiply the filtration efficiency of the system and accommodate the most demanding sandblasting applications.

Unlike conventional horizontal-design dust collectors where cartridges are mounted horizontally and lose up to 30% of their filtration capacity, the vertical design of ISTblast dust collectors allow the dust to fall freely straight down to the bottom of the unit in order to maintain 100% efficiency at all times.

These dust collectors can be installed inside (under some conditions and in accordance with the fire codes in force in your jurisdiction) or outside the building. They are fairly easy to maintain and only require you to regularly empty the dust barrel and replace the clogged cartridges when they reach the end of their service life and are no longer able to filter dust. They can also be equipped with a variety of safety designs and features to prevent fire or explosion when the application generates combustible dust.

The filtering bags are made of circular knit polyester fabrics, providing them with excellent filtration efficiency. During the first few minutes of operation, the filtering bag must fill in its pores in order to perform correctly. Thus, it is normal to see dust escaping from the bags until the filtering media becomes tightly hermetic. Once the bag is completely sealed, this porous fabric can capture up to 99% of particles down to 5 microns or over.

Their unique, seamless tube design consists of a patented loop pile surface that easily removes dust build-ups during the cleaning cycle, while preventing the blinding or plugging of the fabric. Eliminating the seam also offers an additional filter area, providing increased airflow.

Unlike conventional woven and needled textiles, the thickness and fibre density of the circular knit fabric provide a high permeability, reducing pressure drop conditions, with excellent filtration efficiencies. Additionally, electrically conductive carbon fibre is knitted into the fabric to protect against static build-up by constantly drawing off static charges to the ground. Uncontrolled electrostatic build-up could lead to an explosion or fire when combined with sufficient concentration of combustible dust floating in the air. The anti-static yarn also plays a role in increasing filtration efficiency by avoiding static cling, due to opposing static charges between the dust and the filter bag which prevent the bag from releasing the dust cake.

To control dust build-ups on the sidewalls of the filtering bags to an acceptable level in order to allow air pass through the media, bags must be manually or mechanically shaken in order to release excess amounts of dust, which then falls down into a container. IST offers three means to shake filtering bags:

The filtering cartridges are made of the industrys smallest nanofiber (10 microns). Best in class MERV 15 efficiency on sub-micron particulate. This incredible technology is able to capture 100% of foreign particulates down to 0.3 M in size and obtain unequaled surface loading capabilities with nano-sized interfibre pores. The fibres of a conventional cartridge media are six times larger, which allows small particles to become deeply embedded within the media substrate.

The vertical design of ISTblast cartridge-type dust collectors maximizes the filtration efficiency of these cartridges, while minimizing the maintenance required on horizontal design cartridges. Indeed, cartridges mounted horizontally lose up to 30% of their filtration capabilities due to dust accretion at the bottom cavity of the media, and for this reason, horizontally-mounted cartridges must be rotated periodically in order to maximize their performance and durability. This is not the case for vertically-mounted cartridges, since they allow dust to fall freely down to the bottom of the dust collector without altering their filtering efficiency.

The cartridges are cleaned by a pulse of compressed air blowing inside them. The reverse pulse momentarily halts the flow of air passing through the cartridges in order to remove dust on the outer surface. The dust then falls to the bottom of the barrel.

The pulse intervals are controlled by the DCT1000 Sequential Controller, which collects and compares static pressure data on both the dirty and clean side of filters simultaneously. When the pressure loss falls out of the predefined limit, the system generates pulses inside the cartridges until the pressure loss is within the acceptable interval.

When the sequential controller is no longer able to stabilize the static pressure, it is time to replace the filter cartridges. Unlike conventional cartridges found on the market, it is unnecessary to clean them since the dust builds up on its surface only rather than deeply inside the substrate, so it releases easily upon the pulse. Also, replacing the cartridges is fairly easy it can be accomplished from outside the dust collectors housing and without tools.

If your application produces combustible dust, it is extremely important to choose a dust collector design and installation that protects your workers against the risk of fire or explosion. This is why IST provides a variety of designs, as well as active and passive safety features that can contribute to protecting your operators and making your dust collector installation fully compliant with security standards published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Available options include abort dampers, blow back dampers, explosion vents, rotary air locks, as well as fire detection and suppression devices. When necessary, a compliance certificate can be issued by an external audit body in order to assess that your equipment complies with requirements in force and that it does not present a risk to workers.

Diaphragm and solenoid valves work together in maintaining an efficient and reliable working cleaning system. If either the diaphragm valve or solenoid valve has failed, the cleaning system will not function properly leading to higher differential pressure across the dust collector and affecting the whole process system. Failed vales can also lead to higher compress air loss, shortened bag life, blinding of the filter bags and unexpected downtimes.

For many types of baghouses, clamps are a necessary part of a filter bag or pleated filter installation. Clamp-style and material type contributes to the success of the filter installation. Clamps fail for a variety of reasons; misapplication, over-torquing and reusing old clamps.

Door seal is installed on every style of baghouse and is critical to ensure you have an airtight system. Door seal is one of the least expensive items to replace however, is typically overlooked is during maintenance shutdowns.

If the doors on your baghouse are not sealed properly, many problems can occur including dust emissions, high-pressure drop across the filters due to condensation, corrosion of doors and walls, and even production losses.

Reverse air and shaker baghouses rely on tensioning assemblies or tube hooks to support the filter bags in the collectors. These assemblies ensure the filter bags are properly supported through the cleaning cycle and help reduces the shock loads placed on the filters during the cycle. Improper tensioning allows the filter bags to droop around the thimble and leads to abrasion and flex fold wear, reducing filter bag life.

When every replacing reverse air and shaker style filter bags, make sure to check your tensioning and call BVA for any replacement needs. Gauges, pulse controllers and timer boards are all critical components to the operation of a baghouse.

BVA recommends gauges be installed on all baghouse compartments. Gauges are available for simple readout, Magnehelic or a Photohelic gauge allows for on-demand cleaning with adjustable set points which allows you to maintain a more balanced flow across your system. Gauges can be stand-alone or built-in to your timer controller.
