He's worked at the US Centers for Disease Control for nearly 20 years, where he leads the team tasked with 'radiological assessment,' preparing best practices and instruction manuals for what to do if a nuclear disaster ever strikes the US.

So when he fields questions from concerned family members about how radiation might affect their cancer risk, as they hold cellphones to their ears and put Bluetooth devices on day after day, he takes their concerns seriously.

The frequency of radiation, or how energetic and powerful it is, matters a lot. High frequency radiation, like what's in X-ray machines and (on the very extreme end of the spectrum) nuclear bombs, is considered ionizing radiation because it consists of subatomic particles and electromagnetic waves powerful enough to remove electrons from molecules, and damage our DNA.

"The difference in energy is enormous, looking from one end of the spectrum to the other end," he said. The energy in high frequency ionizing radiation, represented on the right hand side of the spectrum in orange, "is billion, billion, billion times greater than the left side," he said.

In the most extreme cases, when people are exposed to extremely high doses of high frequency radiation, death is certain and swift, happening within 48 hours. But with non-ionizing radiation, it's still not clear how much risk exists, and whether there's really any to worry about at all.

Many forms of ionizing radiation, such as X-rays and high energy UV rays, can increase a person's risk of developing cancer. (Ironically, radiation also comes in handy for attacking and treating cancer too).

Certain people are exposed to ionizing radiation more routinely than others by virtue of their profession. X-ray technicians, as well as pilots, astronauts, and flight attendants (who are exposed to more cosmic ionizing radiation) all have higher than average exposures to high frequency radiation that can put them at risk of long-term health consequences.

Most of us get our biggest doses of ionizing radiation from relatively infrequent medical X-rays. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, is also a big threat it's the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. But you can easily test for it at home with an inexpensive kit.

It's still not clear whether any of the non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation emitted from your cell phone every day could pose a health risk. Unlike ionizing radiation, radio waves don't have the power to break molecular bonds.

If you are still concerned and want to reduce your exposure to cell phone radiation, wearing a Bluetooth headset or headphones helps. (Both Ansari and the California Department of Public Health recommend this.)

Wired and wireless headsets emit less radio frequency energy than a cellphone, so if you want to really limit your exposure, keep your phone away from your body in a backpack or purse, and just plug your headphones in when you need to talk.

LG joins the growing smart display field with the Xboom AI ThinQ WK9 ($249.99). It features an 8-inch touch display and stereo speakers developed by Meridian, and like all of the non-Amazon models we've seen so far, is powered by Google Assistant. Its screen is crisp, its speakers are loud, and its voice commands are just as functional as every other Google Assistant smart display we've tested. However, it doesn't distinguish itself in any particular way, and its sound quality is average for the price.

The WK9 is slightly smaller than the JBL Link View and almost twice as wide as the Google Home Hub, measuring 5.3 by 12.6 by 5.2 (HWD) inches. Like the Link View, that extra width holds a set of stereo speakers compared with the Home Hub's mono driver. Unlike the oval, fairly elegant Link View, the WK9 looks blocky and nondescript. The rectangular display is surrounded by a matte black plastic body with metal speaker grilles on the front, framing the glossy central panel that holds the camera and a silver LG logo in addition to the screen. The screen and speaker grilles are angled slightly upward, a standard design element for nearly all smart displays.

A narrow panel on the very top of the display holds a mechanical switch for physically sliding a privacy cover in front of the camera, flanked by two microphone holes. A wider panel tilted slightly back features a large mic mute button and two touch-sensitive volume buttons marked only with white paint; you can mute the mic without looking, but you'll be fumbling along the rest of the smooth panel to adjust the volume. Speaker grille holes can be found in the plastic on the back of the display, and a power connector for the included adapter sits recessed on the bottom, with a small notch for running the cable out the back.

As a Google Assistant device, the WK9 works identically to the Google Home Hub, the JBL Link View, and the Lenovo Smart Display. You set it up with the Google Home app, following the same process to connect it to your network and associate it with your Google account. Once it's online, you can access Google Assistant by saying, "Hey Google," followed by a question or request.

Google Assistant can answer general questions, provide weather reports and sports scores, read your schedule (if you use Google, but not if you use a corporate implementation of G Suite, which is a strange omission), set alarms and timers, and perform other basic tasks with both audio feedback through the speakers and visual feedback on the screen.

It can also control your smart home devices, supporting many major brands including Belkin Wemo plugs, Nest thermostats, Philips Hue lights, Roomba vacuums, and Yale locks, along with full support for all of LG's own ThinQ AI appliances. The list isn't quite as voluminous as the tens of thousands of products Amazon's Alexa voice assistant works with, but it covers the big names and generally supports more natural language phrasing than Alexa's somewhat stiff syntax. The connected devices get their own touch controls on the display, which you can summon by swiping down from the top of the screen or by using your voice. Lights get toggle switches or dimming sliders (and color wheels, if their colors are adjustable), thermostats get temperature displays with an adjustable slider, locks get status icons, and security cameras can even bring up live feeds.

Google Assistant also lets you make phone calls to most North American numbers, which has become a fairly standard feature among smart displays. You can also make video calls over Google Duo, but the now-defunct Hangouts is not supported.

Entertainment on the WK9 is very Google-centric. You can play videos from YouTube, CBS, HBO, Starz, and Viki; music is available via Deezer, Google Play Music, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube Music. Outside of those services, you can't ask Google Assistant to bring up anything to watch or listen to. However, the WK9 supports Google Cast, so you can stream music and video from any compatible app on your phone to the device. It's slightly more roundabout than asking Google Assistant directly, but it means you can watch shows from apps like Crunchyroll and CW TV on the WK9 by casting it from your phone. Curiously, Netflix still can't be cast to any Google Assistant smart display. The WK9 also features Bluetooth for streaming audio directly from any mobile device.

The screen looks bright and crisp, with 1,280-by-800 resolution that slightly edges out 720p but doesn't touch 1080p high definition. It's a standard resolution for most smart displays, with only the 10-inch Lenovo model reaching or exceeding 1080p with its 1,920-by-1,200 resolution. It makes an attractive desktop digital photo frame, especially with how easy it is to simply assign a gallery from Google Photos to the display's Ambient sleep mode.

The Meridian-designed stereo speakers are fairly powerful for the size of the display, with performance approaching, but not quite meeting, the JBL Link View and the surprisingly loud Amazon Echo Show. It capably handles deep bass without attempting to reach very low frequencies. It plays our bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," at maximum volume with no noticeable distortion, though the bass drum hits flirt with poppiness and the synth notes sound a bit hollow.

That slightly hollow sound comes through at lower volumes in the bass drums in Jane's Addiction's "Irresistible Force." Vocals sound full and clear, and the bass and lead guitars both sound clean, with plenty of response in the low-mids to mids. But the WK9 doesn't reach low enough to really bring out the track's foreboding presence, or high enough to give the vocals or snares a strong edge against the rest of the mix.

Yes' "Roundabout" gets similarly conservative treatment by the WK9's frequency range. The electric bass notes sound punchy but not particularly powerful, and the opening acoustic guitar plucks get very little high-frequency finesse to bring out the string texture. The somewhat crunched dynamics make the busy track sound cluttered, keeping the vocals settled slightly in the background as the bass and guitar fight for attention. It's not a bad sound, but the Link View offers better performance in the high-mids and highs, and the Echo Show is simply more booming.

As is the case with all smart displays we've tested, you can get similar audio performance in a far less expensive screen-free smart speaker, which themselves are generally a step down in sound quality and power from similarly priced non-smart wireless speakers. Adding a screen to the mix tends to require a compromise in the sound you can get out of a device this size.

The LG ThinQ WK9 is a functional smart display that performs very much like the other Google Assistant models we've seen. Its size and price make it comparable with the JBL Link View and Lenovo Smart Display, and while it sounds better than the latter, it doesn't quite reach the clarity of the former. If you want a large Google Assistant smart display with good sound, the JBL Link View remains our top pick, and it's still slightly eclipsed by Amazon's Alexa-powered Echo Show. If the screen is more important to you than the sound, the Google Home Hub is a fully functional and much more affordable device despite it mediocre sound quality.
