Im asked quite often to troubleshoot compressed air dryers. Its not just Van Air Systems dryers. I get calls on every make and model imaginable. Over the years we have built a great reputation for helping customers solve issues with their compressed air systems regardless of what brand equipment has been installed. I first try find a solution over the phone, but sometimes it actually requires a on-site inspection of the customers plant air system.

The key to helping the customer is to take your time and properly analyze the installation. You need to develop a systems approach. This means looking at a complex range of problems and solutions, not just what you suspect the problem to be.

This customer has a 5000 SCFM Van Air Systems, model HB-5000, externally heated blower purge dryer and a 5000 SCFM Van Air Systems, model HL-5000, heatless dryer as a backup. When I arrived on site, the customer told me that he could not maintain the specified -40 dew point with the blower purge dryer. The operator then put heatless dryer on line. Still wet air was somehow getting downstream.

Remember always have a systems approach. I started by looking at the compressors to confirm operating pressures, temperatures, and flow rates to the dryers. Next, I checked the automatic condensate drains on the after-cooler separators and pre-filters. Everything checked out.

Now, I watched the heatless dryer to make sure it was cycling properly. I needed to confirm that the each tower pressure gauge read zero during regeneration. Too much pressure in a regenerating tower of heatless dryer causes problems.

Next, I looked at the visual moisture indicating stick on the dryers gauge panel. This is a small clear tube filled with color changing silica gel crystals. Blue crystals mean the dryers outlet air is dry. Pink crystals indicate that wet air is exiting the dryer. In this case, the moisture indicator on the dryer was blue.

I then asked the customer to bring the HB-5000 blower purge dryer on line. This dryer operates on an 8 hour cycle(4 hours drying, 4 hours regenerating) so I had to wait for an hour or so to make sure the regenerating tower was coming up to the proper temperature. After this, I fast cycled the dryer to make sure it was sequencing properly. Everything checked out here as well.

So I went back and traced all the piping between the compressors and the dryers. Thats where I found the problem. There was an open by-pass valve. Wet air upstream of the dryer was escaping past the dryer, mixing with the dried air.

For this troubleshooting call, I visited an apple processing plant in the Shenandoah Valley region of northern Virginia. The primary products produced at this facility are apple juice and apple sauce. Our representative in Virginia, PBE Inc., asked me to make a call with them to try and solve the customers compressed air problems.

The first application we looked at included a 75 horse power screw compressor, an after-cooler with a separator and automatic condensate drain, and a Hankison 300 SCFM heatless dryer with mounted pre- and post- filters.

The compressed air supplied by this installation feeds the apple juice bottling line. We checked all the drains and the pressure and temperature conditions at the dryer inlet. Everything looked good.

We then to a look at the dryer to make sure it was cycling properly. I noticed that the off stream regenerating tower pressure gauge read 30 psig. The regenerating tower on a heatless dryer must be at 0 psig in order to get a complete regeneration of the desiccant bed. What was causing this back pressure, I next asked. Upon further inspection I found the customer piped the purge exhaust from the dryer some 20 ft to an outside wall. This is a fairly common strategy for managing the noise of a heatless dryer. But if one isnt careful, this extra piping will put a lot of back pressure on the regenerating tower. In this case, the purge exhaust pipe size was actually smaller in diameter than the purge outlet on the dryer. The end-user had dramatically restricted the flow of purge air. This restriction caused the back pressure we were seeing on the regenerating tower. We told the customer he needed increase the pipe by 2 full pipe sizes.

Next we visited the bottling plant. Here slugs of water from the compressed air system were landing directly on product. This leads to instant project rejection. One problem I observed here was the piping drop legs. The drops were from the bottom of the pipe header instead of the top. Because the heatless dryer was not working properly all of the moisture going downstream was pooling in the bottom of the pipe header and made its way to the bottling machines.

Since it would be quite costly to re-do all of these stainless steel pipe drops correctly, we recommended the customer install point of use filtration on all the bottling machine pipe drops. Of course, this would be a stop gap measure until the root cause of the water could be addressed.

We then took a look at the 700 scfm compressed air application in the apple sauce plant. This system has (3) 50 horse power screw compressors with after coolers, separators, a competitors refrigerated dryer with pre and post filters, and a dry air receiver tank. Here again, we checked all the condensate drains to make sure they were working. We also checked the inlet conditions to the dryer. Everything checked out, the dryer was getting a 35F PDP according to the readout on the control panel. Our contact said water was showing up in the apple sauce plant especially in the winter months. What we found here is the compressor room is a separate building, and the compressed air lines run outside before entering the apple sauce plant.

In the winter months in northern Virginia temperatures can fall well below 35F. Whenever compressed air cools below its dew point, condensation will start to form. Since the compressed air lines run outside between the buildings they are condensing water out when the ambient drops below 35F.

We also informed the customer they really need to install a regenerative dryer rather than a refrigerated for the apple sauce plant. A refrigerated dryer cannot product air lines exposed to low ambient temperatures. Also, we informed them the bottling plant application could have used a refrigerated dryer instead of a regenerative dryer because all of the compressed air lines are indoors in a climate controlled ambient and a -40F PDP is not necessary.

The customer was very appreciative we were able to help them solve their moisture problems which will eliminate the product rejection issues. Im always glad to solve a problem, even when it involves a non-Van Air Systems dryer.

When they break, however, you may worry that the only person who can actually fix it is a professional. Before you dial your local service, know you can tend to a surprising number of small dryer issues.

Here are some tips to help you troubleshoot when your dryer isn't working properly, no matter what brand it is, and make some simple repairs. These may save you the expense of a service call or eliminate some issues so the problem is easier for the technician to solve.

If the dryer won't start, check to be sure that the dryer is plugged in. This seems so simple but you don't need a repair technician to do it. Plugs can get bumped loose by animals or fallen objects. If that doesn't work, move on to the next item on this checklist.

Once you've made sure the dryer is properly plugged into the electrical outlet butit still won't run, it's time to check your central home electrical box to see if a fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped. You may be able to replace the fuse or turn the breaker back on. This is a good time to check the voltage in the outlet with a voltage meter. Be sure that your outlet is functioning properly. If not, call an electrician immediately!

If you have agas dryerbe sure that the pilot light is lit and that you have an adequate supply of gas if the dryer is fueled with liquid propane.Both electric and gas dryers require 240 volts to operate.

If a dryer turns on and then shuts off very quickly (under fiveminutes or so), it is usually a problem with either the thermostat or thermal resistor. The thermal fuse "blows" and turns off the dryer to prevent overheating.

You can check the temperature sensor with a voltage meter to determine if it is working properly. While you're checking these elements, also check the heating element and timer to be sure they are receiving power. Check the user or repair manual.

If the dryer is making screeching or squealing noises, the problem is worn drum bearings or supports. Unless you are very handy with tools, this will require a repair technicianbecause the entire unit must be disassembled.

If it takes forever for a load of clothes to dry and your clothes come out covered in lint, clean out that lint filter! If the lint filter is full, then air is not flowing freely and your machine is forced to work longer than necessary.

After you empty the filter, give it a good cleaning to get rid of any residue from dryer sheets. You should also use a bit of rubbing alcohol to clean the electronic moisture sensors (one or two little metal strips inside the dryer drum). You'll get your dryer working more efficiently and prevent a possible fire.

If your filter is clean, and the dryer is heating up but it is still taking too long to dry clothing; there are two things to check. Is the dryer vent system kinked, clogged, or disconnected? Use at long-handled bristle brush toclean out the dryer vent. The vent should be as short as possible between the machine and the outside exhaust vent to prevent clogs. If the venting system is long and you can't reach the entire length with a brush, use a leaf blower to clean the system or hire a professional.

Now, go outside andcheck the outside vent. Most are designed with a trap door that only opens when dryer air and lint are blown out. If the vent hood gets coated with lint, the trap door can't open. This is often a problem in high humidity climates. Check it every few months, you'll be amazed at the amount of lint you find.

You've checked everything. If you've kept the operating manual, get it out and read it! You may just find the answer to your question. If you don't have the manual, visit the manufacturer's website. It may take a little time but it's much less expensive than a repair call.

Apr. 28, 2010 -- The chilling video of a Tulsa, Oklahoma man being pulled to his death in an industrial clothes dryer provides a rare look at a hidden national tragedy: more Americans die on the job every year than have been killed in the entire seven years of the war in Iraq.

According to the Department of Labor, 5,214 people were killed in workplace accidents in the United States in 2008, the most recent year for which figures are available. It is an average of about 14 deaths a day.

"I think there are a lot of irresponsible employers who don't ensure that workers are given safe work places in which to work," said Dr. David Michaels, the newly appointed director of OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Agency, responsible for workplace safety. "Fourteen deaths a day on the job is far too many," he said in an interview to be broadcast Wednesday on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer and Nightline.

The company appeared to have an excellent safety record until the fatal accident in March, 2007. Six months after the accident, OSHA levied $2.75 million in fines for violations of safety rules connected to the dryers at the Tulsa plant.

Torres Gomez had climbed on to a moving conveyor belt to dislodge a pile of clothes being fed into the dryer. He became entangled and was pulled into the dryer where the temperature was in excess of 300 degrees.

In a statement to ABC News, Cintas said that "evidence and sworn testimony" established that no one in management was aware that employees were getting on moving belts to clear jams, that employees had been trained not to get on moving belts "for any reason," and that those employees who violated the training testified they had done so "only when no member of management was present."

Cintas agreed to pay the fines huge by OSHA standards but continued to maintain it had done nothing wrong. The company says it has since installed equipment that would make it impossible for a similar accident to occur.

But in his interview with ABC News, the new OSHA director Dr. Michaels was highly critical of Bush administration policies that he said overlooked efforts by many companies to understate accidents and injuries.

"It is not welcome because I think there will be a dimunition of voluntary compliance," said Fellner who disputed the contention that employers are systematically under reporting injuries and accidents.

"OSHA has been working well," he said. "When you're talking about the records over twenty to thirty years of millions of employees, the amount of systemic under-reporting that would have to result in those records being inaccurate would be enormous. It is not possible," he said.

This component detects the heat that is emitted by flame.If the Flame Sensor is faulty, the dryer will not heat.Remove the Flame Sensor and test it for continuity using a multimeter.If Flame Sensor has continuity, this lets you know the problem is elsewhere.If the Flame Sensor has no continuity, it needs to be removed and replaced.

(Located on burner assembly)The High Limit Thermostat regulates dryer temp and shuts off the burner if the dryer overheats.The Cycling Thermostat cycles the burner ON and OFF to regulate air temperature.If either of these thermostats are faulty, the burner will not work.Remove the Thermostat and test for continuity using a multimeter.If the Thermostat has continuity, this lets you know the problem is elsewhere.If the Thermostats have no continuity, one or both needs to be removed and replaced.

Kenmore elite gas dryer model 11094834201So I decided to do an extra cleaning of the lint screen, I unscrewed 3 screws that hold the lint screen compartment, there were wires connected to the moisture sensor bars, I was gentle and just laid the whole thing over inside the dryer. Then I cleaned the massive amount of lent that was down inside there. After cleaning all that I could reach I put it back together and screwed the 3 screws back in. Well! I did something???? Now the dryer wont dry my clothes! It runs fine, starts right up as usual but wont get hot or stay hot. Its weird, Ive pulled the bottom panel off and watched the igniter light the flame and after maybe 5 seconds a click happens and it shuts off. It will try to light up every few minutes but gets clicked off every time, or so I think but also sometimes I go to get laundry out.hey weve got 5 kids and beasts for dogs, lots of laundering:/ so yeah we are using it, but anyway sometimes its hot in there and the clothes are dry?????????wtheck???? Kenmore Elite Dishwasher has a noise in the last 2:13 seconds of washing cycle. It sound like it is in the left lower side of washer. Dish washer is empty at the time of noise. Whenever anything doesn't work properly, it's frustrating and we get it. If this is your first time experiencing troubles with your dryer, you're probably unsure where to even start. Getting your dryer repaired and back up and working is critical to keeping the moisture out to protect your piping, tools and equipment. First thing, check the cooler on the air compressor. If the inlet air temperature is too high going into the air dryer, it will over-work the dryer and it will never reach its dewpoint temperature. If the inlet air temperature is fine, then continue by checking the below items.

The first thing you should be looking at if your air dryer isn't performing. If your coils are dirty, your air dryer isn't getting proper air flow. The dirty lint blocks and traps the air. Time to clean! Use a soft cloth or brush to clean dirt from the refrigeration condenser coil to allow free passage of air. The condenser may be blown clean with compressed air or, if heavily contaminated, washed with mild detergent and water.

If your have the dryer turned on and your fan does not, this is a big deal! If the fan isn't pushing air through the coils, there is no way to cool your air. Below are a few things to consider what may be causing this to happen. - Motor shortage or burnt out motor - Failed contactor - Shorted or burnt wires - Blown fuse - Bad fan pressure switch or controller

If you have moisture in your pipes that could mean 1 of 3 things. The dryer is working outside of it's rating, there is bad conditions of condensation, OR the condensate drain discharge is not working properly. Few items to try: - Check inlet air flow rate and temperature to ensure they are properly (within design parameters) working: - Check the room temperature (same as above) - Clean the condenser - Check pressure switch/fan operation - Check your coalescent filter drains

If you aren't getting any air through the dryer outlet, most likely the heat exchanger is frozen inside. Some ice is normal, but if frozen you need to take faction fast. How does something like that happen? Here's a few common reasons: 1. By-pass broken / out of calibration: If this happens, ice builds on the coils and acts as a type of insulation, further compounding the problem and allowing ice to build up even further. 2. Room temperature too low: Room temperature can not be below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and a dryer should not run lower than 35 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Refrigerant leaks in the circuit: As the volume of circulating refrigerant declines below specifications, refrigerant temperature initially drops below freezing. Low refrigerant usually indicates a leak in the system that must be tracked down by a professional utilizing leak detection equipment, then properly sealed. Simply topping up a low refrigerant level by adding more without pinpointing and fixing the leak is not a competent repair. If ice accumulation on the coil extends beyond the dimensions of the condensate drip pan beneath the air handler, be ready with containers to catch the dripping water and prevent water damage as the ice melts.

Sizing a dryer can be tricky if you haven't done this before. Having an undersized dryer can lead to poor air quality and overworking your dryer while an over-sized dryer can waste electricity. Its best to make sure youve got one sized correctly for your installation. If you arent sure if your dryer is sized correctly, contact us for help.

Note that the location of the compressors and dryers can make a big difference in dryer performance. The cooler the air going into the compressor, the lower the dryer inlet temperature. If the compressor room is hot, consider moving the dryer to another, cooler location to boost its effectiveness.
