The International Energy Agency (IEA) was founded in 1974 in response to oil embargos the previous year that caused the global price of oil to surge 300% from $3 per barrel to $12 per barrel. From the start, the IEAs mission has been to help member nations deal with major oil supply disruptions.

Over the years, the groups purview has broadened to include more than just oil security, andin its most recent report,the IEA sounds the warning bell on the global supply of key mineralsparticularly copper.

Todays supply and investment plans for many critical minerals fall well short of what is needed to support an accelerated deployment of solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicles, IEA Executive Directive Faith Birol writes.

Many of these minerals are produced by a very small number of companies in a small number of jurisdictions. Take rare earth metals, used in everything from semiconductors to smartphone batteries. China controls between80% and 95% of the world market,depending on the mineral.

Or look at copper. Chile and Peru are responsible for a combined 40% of global output. The largest copper mine in the world, Chiles Escondida, is believed to have reached peak production. Meanwhile, the Chilean government has threatened to shut down the mine57.5% of which is owned by BHPfor its water usage. Oh, and did I mentiontheres a strike at Escondida?

Like gold, fewer and fewer large copper deposits are being discovered, and the time between discovery and production has lengthened over the years as costs rise. S&P Global Kevin Murphy called last decade dismal in terms of new discoveries. Of the 224 copper deposits that were discovered between 1990 and 2019,only 16 were found in the past 10 years.Although the earths surface still has an abundance of the red metal, most new deposits are of low grade.

This could be a problem going forward. As Ive written about before, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and battery storage technologyboth of whichrely heavily on copperis set to accelerate rapidly over the coming decades. Last year, EV sales were around 3 million. By 2040, they could be as high as 70 million.

According to the IEA, copper will remain the most widely used metal in renewable energy technologies. Compared to aluminum, nickel and zinc, its importance is rated high for most new energy-related projects. Thats mainly because its electrical conductivity is the second best after silver and 60% higher than aluminum. Goldman Sachs predicts that by 2030, copper demand will grow nearly 600% to 5.4 million tons.

Although large copper discoveries are becoming fewer and farther between, there are notable exceptions. The IEA mentions Perus Quellaveco, majority-owned by Anglo American, and Ivanhoes Kamoa-Kakula in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Ive written about the developing Kakula project several times before. Last week, Ivanhoe announced that copper concentrate productionofficially began at the world-class discovery,several months ahead of schedule.

Discovering and delivering a copper province of this scale, grade and outstanding ESG credentials, ahead of schedule and on budget, is a unicorn in the copper mining business, commented Ivanhoe founder and co-chair Robert Friedland, who added that Kakula was discovered only five years ago. This represents remarkable progress by the mining industrys glacial standards from first drill hole to a new major mining operation.

Kakula, Robert says, is now on path to become the worlds second largest copper mining complex and perhaps eventhelargest. Further, the project is estimated to be the worlds highest grade major copper mine. Further still, Ivanhoe pledges that Kakula will be a net-zero greenhouse gas generator, making the company an attractive ESG play.

Last week, analysts at CIBC announced that they adjusted their end-of-year copper price forecastto $5.25 a pound,Kitco reports. The estimates are now 22% and 32% above 2021 and 2022 consensus estimates.

For alluvial gold, also called sand gold, gravel gold, placer gold or river gold, gravity separation is suitable. This type of gold contains mainly free gold blended with the sand. Under this circumstance, the technology is to wash away the mud and sieve out the big size stone first with the trommel screen, and then using centrifugal concentrator, shaking table as well as gold carpet to separate the free gold from the stone sands.

CIL is mainly for processing the oxide type gold ore if the recovery rate is not high or much gold is still left by using otation and/ or gravity circuits. Slurry, containing uncovered gold from primary circuits, is pumped directly to the thickener to adjust the slurry density. Then it is pumped to leaching plant and dissolved in aerated sodium cyanide solution. The solubilized gold is simultaneously adsorbed directly into coarse granules of activated carbon, and it is called Carbon-In-Leaching process (CIL).

Heap leaching is always the first choice to process low grade ore easy to leaching. Based on the leaching test, the gold ore will be crushed to the determined particle size and then sent to the dump area. If the content of clay and solid is high, to improve the leaching efficiency, the agglomeration shall be considered. By using the cement, lime and cyanide solution, the small particles would be stuck to big lumps. It makes the cyanide solution much easier penetrating and heap more stable. After sufficient leaching, the pregnant solution will be pumped to the carbon adsorption column for catching the free gold. The barren liquid will be pumped to the cyanide solution pond for recycle usage.

The loaded carbon is treated at high temperature to elute the adsorbed gold into the solution once again. The gold-rich eluate is fed into an electrowinning circuit where gold and other metals are plated onto cathodes of steel wool. The loaded steel wool is pretreated by calcination before mixing with uxes and melting. Finally, the melt is poured into a cascade of molds where gold is separated from the slag to gold bullion.

The mountainous character of the country is the outcome of orogenic (mountain-building) forces largely during Quaternary time (roughly, the past 2.6 million years), as evidenced by the frequent occurrence of violent earthquakes, volcanic activity, and signs of change in sea levels along the coast. There are no sizable structural plains and peneplains (large land areas leveled by erosion), features that usually occur in more stable regions of the Earth. The mountains are for the most part in a youthful stage of dissection in which steep slopes are incised by dense river-valley networks. Rivers are mostly torrential, and their valleys are accompanied by series of river terraces that are the result of movements in the Earths crust, as well as climatic and sea-level changes in Holocene times (i.e., the past 11,700 years). Recent volcanoes are juxtaposed with old and highly dissected ones. The shores are characterized by elevated and depressed features such as headlands and bays, which display an incipient stage of development.

The mountains are divided into many small land blocks that are separated by lowlands or deep saddles; there is no long or continuous mountain range. These land blocks are the result of intense faulting (movement of adjacent rock masses along a fracture) and warping (bending of the Earths crust); the former process is regarded as dominant. One consequence is that mountain blocks are often bounded by fault scarps and flexure slopes that descend in step formation to the adjacent lowlands.

Coalescing alluvial fanscone-shaped deposits of alluvium that run togetherare formed where rivers emerge from the mountains. When the rivers are large enough to extend their courses to the sea, low deltaic plains develop in front of the fans; this occurs most frequently where the rivers empty into shallow and sheltered bays, as in the deltas of Kant (Kwanto), Nbi, and saka. In most places, however, fan surfaces plunge directly into the sea and are separated by low, sandy beach ridges.

Dissected plains are common. Intense disturbances have caused many former alluvial fans, deltas, and sea bottoms to be substantially uplifted to form flat-topped uplands such as those found in the Kant Plain. Frequently the uplands have been overlain with volcanic ash, as in the Kant and Tokachi plains.
