magnetic on netflix: how nazar canyon off portugal makes some of biggest waves in the world

The Netflix series follows a group of athletes who travel around the world to remote and exotic places in pursuit of their passion for extreme athletic activities, including skiing, sailing, base jumping, snowboarding, mountain biking, and surfing.

According to Swellinfo.com CEO Micah Sklut, big wintertime storms in the North Atlantic push huge swells of water toward Europe. Nazar Canyon accentuates the effect of the storms with its unique underwater topography.

Normally, what happens is that the open-ocean swells, as they approach the coastline, theyre going to be slowed down by the ocean bottom as it gets shallower. But at Nazare the ocean swells get focused in this submarine canyon and have much more energy.

Other spots around the world with similar conditions include Tahitis Teahupoo, Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, the Cortes Bank in the North Pacific Ocean (southwest of Los Angeles), and Mavericks, near Half Moon Bay in Northern California.

If youre in the mood for something extreme and jaw-dropping then Magnetic has your back. The documentary, which was recently added to Netflix, follows a collection of extreme athletes as they surf, ski, and sail across some of the most beautiful and intense landscapes in the world. But where exactly was Magnetic filmed? Dont worry, we have you covered.

The almost two-hour documentary tells seven different stories about athletes dedicated to living their most extreme lives. And we have your guide to all of them. From who these adventurers are to where they like to go, heres your guide to Magnetic.

The Nazar Canyon in Portugal and the islands of Hawaii are the locations of those jaw-dropping surfing scenes. The surfers in this documentary claim that Nazar is home to the biggest waves in the world. Also the film specifically focuses on surfing in the Hawaiian island of Maui and the French Polynesian island Maui.

Next up is skiing, and god are there some beautiful locales for that. The first skiing segment follows Willie Lindberg on his two and a half month journey to ski in Chamonix, France, and down the LAmone mountain face in Switzerland. The documentary then follows a group of skiers on an even more ambitious expedition. A group three skiers and snowboarders try their luck descending Mirshikar Summit in Northern Pakistan. One false move can cause an avalanche in this treacherous terrain.

The last three extreme sports Magnetic chronicles are wind surfing, mountain biking, and speed flying. A professional wind surfer details his life plan and ambitions in Tarifa, Spain. Samoens, France sees a professional climber and a freestyler wheelie past waterfalls and terrifying looking rocks. And New Zealand is home to some of the most gorgeous views as the camera follows two speed flyers in the middle of filming.

The surfers who are introduced while tackling the Nazar Canyon are Pedro Pisco, Andrey Karr, Maya Gabeira, and Toby Cunningham. Pisco has appear in 60 Minutes Sports. Karr has written for Surfer. Gabeira holds the Guinness World Record for riding the biggest wave ever by a female surfer. And Cunningham is an award-winning world class surfer.

Next up is wind surfing with professional Liam Whaley. Born and raised in Ibiza, Spain, Whaley has won awards for his kite surfing. As he says in the documentary he plans on continuing the sport as long as he possibly can.

Then there are the mountain bikers in Samoens, France, Xavier Marovelli and Tom Barrer. While Marovelli considers himself a climber, Barrer is more of a freestyler. Marovelli has been profiled in many publications about cycling.

Its then back to skiing only this time Magnetic takes us to North Pakistan. Thats whereSam Favret, Lo Slemett, and Julien Herry aka Pica try to go down the Mirshikar Summit as a skiing and snowboarding team. Of the three Slemett is likely the best known, earning several profiles about his expertise at winter sports.

Two speedflyers, the pair has long worked together with Lee attempting dangerous moves and Templeton capturing his every move on film. Only when youre up hundreds of feet in the air strung up by a parachute, filming is just as thrilling as being filmed.

Magnetic finally closes out where it started: with another surfing exploration. Most of the documentarys last segment follows Zane Kekoa Schweitzer, an athlete with aspirations to be the best waterman in the world. By that Schweitzer means he doesnt just surf. He windsurfs, dives, and almost anything in between. As Schweitzer chronicles his favorite spots for waves in Hawaii, hes joined by his equally impressive surfing buddies Lorenzo Avvenenti, Tikanui Smith, Tehotu Wong, Hira Teriinatoofa, and Matahi Drollet.

According to Magnetic, the Nazar Canyon in Portugal is the only answer to that question. The documentary captures truly jaw-dropping waves as these extreme athletes decide how theyre going to tackle this watery monster. Magnetic even chronicles a story about how one surfer rode the same major swell three times, once in Hawaii, once in California, and finally in Nazar.
