The study concentrates on the fine and coarse aggregates, the important factors for strength development in concreting. Generally, sand is used as fine aggregate and broken stone as coarse aggregate in all the constructions. Stone dust produced from stone crushing industry and gravel available at many locations, however, can be used as an appropriate alternative material to sand and broken stone respectively. Due to this, the pressure on natural resources such as sand and broken stone will be greatly reduced without compromising the strength and cost aspect of the concrete. Hence in the present study, it was decided to replace sand with three different quantities of quarry dust from 20 to 40% with an increment of 10%. Similarly, broken stone was also replaced with gravel from 20 to 40% with an increment of 10%. Experiments were conducted for control concrete, with replacement of sand only, with replacement of gravel only and with different combinations of replacement of sand and broken stone with crusher dust and gravel. From the experiments conducted, it was inferred that the strength could be improved suitably by replacing sand and broken stone without compromising the desired characteristic strength; and the cost could also be reduced. It was concluded that the concrete made with 20% replacement of sand by crusher dust and 20% replacement of broken stone by gravel gave better results in terms of strength and cost. It was also noted that up to 40% replacement of broken stone by gravel and 20% replacement of sand by crusher dust also gave better results than control concrete.
