Rotary drum dryers can be chosen for projects large and small. They come in all sizes to accommodate many products, quantities, and moisture content ranges. Although they can be much larger, a 14 diameter drums will accommodate many different needs and is the most practical for manufacture, transport, and installation. Depending on length, a 14 drum could produce 289,000 tons/year (263,000 tonnes/year) of 10%mcwb product from 50% mcwb product.
Rotary drum dryers can be designed to withstand extremely high temperatures and/or corrosive materials. A basic carbon steel drum is designed to withstand inlet temperatures from 1,000F 1,100F. With specialty materials, rotary drum dryers can handle much higher inlet temperatures. Stainless steel can be used in place of carbon steel if the product is known to be corrosive.
Rotary drum flighting is the primary material handling mechanism in a drum. Flighting can be designed to accommodate different flow characteristics of the materials to be dried. Some materials clump and potentially form balls which need to be broken up, while others flow easily and must be separated at a higher frequency per flight. Other pieces might be long and stringy and can easily get trapped. Different flighting designs can solve these, and other problems.
The flighting in a rotary drum dryer system can be changed to repurpose a used or existing dryer. A flighting designer can look at the flow characteristics of the material in question and determine what kind of flights are necessary, thereby converting the dryer to a new purpose at a fraction of the cost of buying a new dryer. Not only are they great for uniform solid particles, but they are the best solution for non-uniform solid particles. In many countries of the world, the use of solar thermal systems in the agricultural area to conserve vegetables, fruits, coffee and other crops has shown to be practical, economical and the responsible approach environmentally. Solar heating systems to dry food and other crops can improve the quality of the product, while reducing wasted produce and traditional fuelsthus improving the quality of life, however the availability of good information is lacking in many of the countries where solar food processing systems are most needed. Solar food dryers are available in a range of size and design and are used for drying various food products. It is found that various types of driers are available to suit the needs of farmers. Therefore, selection of dryers for a particular application is largely a decision based on what is available and the types of dryers currently used widely. A comprehensive review of the various designs, details of construction and operational principles of the wide variety of practically realized designs of solar-energy drying systems reported previously is presented. A systematic approach for the classification of solar-energy dryers has been evolved. Two generic groups of solar-energy dryers can be identified, viz. passive or natural-circulation solar-energy dryers and active or forced-convection solar-energy dryers. Some very recent developments in solar drying technology are highlighted.
The major difference in dryers is how they're powered either by natural gas or electricity. Although you won't notice a difference in how thoroughly they dry, there are price differences. A gas dryer costs roughly $50-$100 more than its electric sibling. But a gas unit is generally less expensive to operate and will often pay back its higher cost in energy savings within the first year (depending on usage and utility rates). How often do you use your dryer and what type of clothes do you dry weekly? If you have a family of four or more and regularly tackle jeans, sneakers, and heavy work clothes, you may prefer a large, heavy-duty dryer and one that offers a long warranty. If your wash load contains a wide variety of fabrics and garments, look for a dryer with the specialty cycles to give these items the care they require.
Where is your dryer located? If your clothes dryer will be installed in a dimly lit basement, look for a console that includes indicator lights and has large, legible type or a bright digital readout. Always consider how your dryer will be vented to the outside. Make sure the model you select can be vented in the direction your installation requires.
Do you often juggle wash with other chores? If you're a multitasker on washday, check out clothes dryers with moisture sensors in the drum. These sensors detect the moisture remaining in the load and automatically stop the cycle when your clothes are dry reducing wear and tear on the garments. Extended tumbling is another option worth shopping for. It lets you dial up to a three-hour unheated, intermittent tumbling period to keep wrinkles from setting in until you unload the dryer. Dryers offering steam refresh cycles can freshen and dewrinkle garments that you have left in the dryer with a 15- or 20-minute steam treatment.
How long do you plan to keep your clothes dryer? If you're buying the appliance for a temporary home you plan to sell in a few years, you may not want to spend a lot if you don't plan to take it with you.
If you tend to pop clothes into the dryer in the morning before work (when you're time-pressed), the "favorite" cycle lets you quickly set your most-used dryer cycles with one touch. Another notable dryer feature is reverse tumbling. This is where the drum periodically reverses direction during the cycle to better keep garments and large items, like bedding, tangle-free. Any dryers that offer antibacterial or sanitizing cycles should be NSF-certified. This third-party certification gives you the assurance that the cycle will kill 99.9% of germs, as expected. Electronic controls are spiffier looking and allow certain conveniences, but they can be more expensive to service because of their circuitry. Dial controls are less expensive than electronic ones but can be difficult for some users to turn. Before buying your clothes dryer, consider the logistics. When will someone be home to accept delivery of your clothes dryer? Do you need your old unit hauled away or does your town allow curbside pickup of appliances? Will the new dryer fit through doorways and up or down stairs easily when delivered?

A conveyor-belt dryer was developed using a combined infrared and hot air heating system that can be used in the drying of fruits and vegetables. The drying system having two chambers was fitted with infrared radiation heaters and through-flow hot air was provided from a convective heating system. The system was designed to operate under either infrared radiation and cold air (IR-CA) settings of 2000W/m2 with forced ambient air at 30C and air flow of 0.6m/s or combined infrared and hot air convection (IR-HA) dryer setting with infrared intensity set at 2000W/m2 and hot at 60C being blown through the dryer at a velocity of 0.6m/s or hot air convection (HA) at an air temperature of 60C and air flow velocity 0.6m/s but without infrared heating. Apple slices dried under the different dryer settings were evaluated for quality and energy requirements. It was found that drying of apple (Golden Delicious) slices took place in the falling rate drying period and no constant rate period of drying was observed under any of the test conditions. The IR-HA setting was 57.5 and 39.1% faster than IR-CA and HA setting, respectively. Specific energy consumption was lower and thermal efficiency was higher for the IR-HA setting when compared to both IR-CA and HA settings. The rehydration ratio, shrinkage and colour properties of apples dried under IR-HA conditions were better than for either IR-CA or HA.
