We sell all of our online materials by the cubic yard. A cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet. You can use the online calculator to determine how many cubic yards of material are required. As a general guide, 1 cubic yard of aggregate, sand, or dirt is equivalent to 1.5 tons.

There is finer and more coarse sand, so the density, measured for dry sand in kg per cubic meter or pounds per cubic feet, of your particular shipment may vary. For this reason, and due to potential loses / waste, you should consider buying 5-6% more sand than estimated so you don't run just short of what you need in the end.
The volume of a figure with a round foundation is its height times the area of its foundation. To calculate the foundation area we need its diameter, since the formula is x r2, where r is the radius, or diameter/2.

Sand is a naturally occurring granular material which is composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles, rounded and polished to a varying extent. Sand can be thought of as finer gravel, or coarser silt. In some cases, "sand" refers to a textural class of soil, that is - a soil which has more than 85% of its mass comprised of sand-sized particles. Sand is a renewable resource in the long run, but in human timescale it is practically non-renewable. Sand is a major component of concrete and due to the high demand for concrete for construction, suitable for concrete sand is also in high demand.
The most common constituent of sand in inland continental settings and non-tropical coastal settings is silica quartz (silicon dioxide - SiO2). The second most common type of sand, mostly encountered in islands and near the sea, is calcium carbonate which is created by various life-forms, like coral and shellfish. Of course, the exact composition will vary depending on local rock sources and conditions during the formation of the pebbles.
Sand for domestic or garden use is usually sold in small packets of several pounds / kilograms, and for larger projects in bags of 40, 60 or 80 lbs - 25kg or 50kg in Europe and other places. For construction work, concrete mixing, etc. it is sold by the tonne and comes in trucks.
Contrary to what you may think, there is more than one type of sand, by the size of its pebbles and it's intended use . Selecting the right type and size is crucial, as some sands have a different application than others.
Standard sand, in addition, shall be light grey or whitish color, should be free from silt and the grains should be angular, but a small percentage of flaky or rounded particles are permissible. Some manufacturers express the grade and type of the sand in other ways, e.g. "river sand" (a.k.a. "sharp sand", "builder's sand", "grit sand", "concrete sand"), "masonry sand", "M-10 sand" (granite sand), "play sand", each being finer and more expensive than the previous one.
A cubic yard of typical sand weighs about 2700 pounds or 1.35 tons. A square yard of a sandbox with a depth of 1 foot (30.48 cm) weighs about 900 pounds (410 kg) or slightly less than half a ton. The water content of the sand is assumed to be moderate.
A ton of sand is typically about 0.750 cubic yards (3/4 cu yd), or 20 cubic feet. Sand is assumed relatively damp, since adding water can increase or decrease the density of the sand considerably (e.g. if it was raining or if you dig up and leave sand under the sun so water evaporates).
When calculating the sand's weight, make sure you do not confuse the tonne (metric ton) with the ton (short ton). The first one is used by all countries in the world and is defined to be equal to 1000 kg by the international body of standardization. The ton is currently only used in the United States and is equal to 2000 pounds (2000 lbs). The difference between the two is not huge but can quickly add up to a significant number as the amount increases.

For bark or mulch, a nice thick depth would be 3 to 4 inches. If you want to cover an area with gravel, 1 to 2 inches should be sufficient depending on the size of the gravel. If you are using 3/4" inch gravel or larger figure on at least 2 inches in depth to get good coverage.
If you want to haul these materials in your own truck, you need to know the weight per ton and the capacity of your truck. As a general rule of thumb, small trucks (1/2 ton) can haul a half yard of gravels and soil or a yard of bark. Large pick-up trucks (3/4 and 1 ton) can haul one yard of heavy material or a couple of yards of bark. Or, we can deliver to your site.

Bulk material distributors usually sell goods using measurements of tons and/or cubic yards. Lighter weight items such as compost, mulch, and amended garden soil are usually sold in cubic yards. Heavier items, like gravel, are often sold by weight in tons so that the person hauling the goods knows how much weight they will be carrying.
Our compost calculator gives measurements in both cubic yards and tons based on average dry weights. Note though, that if you are using gravel, such as for walkways and driveways, it may come pre-mixed with water.
The addition of water adds more weight even though the square footage covered remains unchanged. As such, if you are working with wet materials, priced by the ton, youll need to make some adjustments to get an accurate estimate.
Figuring out how much mulch or other material you need to fill your space is the easy part. Making sure you get a good price can be more complicated. Here are a few things to keep in mind when making bulk landscape material purchases.
Tractor buckets come in various sizes. So, make sure you ask how big the bucket is if you are paying by the scoop. Dont assume that a scoop is a cubic yard because many people use buckets that are equal to 3/4th of a yard.
Bagged landscape materials are also often sold by size or weight. Mulch, potting soil, and garden soil usually come in two or three cubic foot bags. Rocks and compost though are typically sold by weight.
To make things more confusing, bag size varies between manufacturers. Standard compost frequently comes in 40-pound bags, while organic compost might be sold in 1.5 cubic foot bags. Rocks in bags can vary from 30 to 60 pounds depending on whether they are more expensive decorative rocks or inexpensive fill rocks.

We also list the amount needed in pounds so you can use that to help you figure out how many bags, by weight, you will need. However, to use that line item for price estimation, you will need to take the number of pounds on the bag and divide it by the bag price. When you buy from bulk retailers, they often offer delivery services. Bulk materials are almost always significantly cheaper than bagged materials. But, the delivery fee sometimes negates those savings.
For your average home user, what you really need to know is how much it will cost to fill a certain area. Qualified bulk retailers regardless of what units they use for their pricing should be able to tell you how much of their material you need to fill your area and what the total cost will be.
