Relatively inexpensive and easy to install, a crushed stone walkway blends into almost any landscape. The addition of flexible edging allows for gentle curves and keeps the material in place. With replenishing every few years, this path will serve for decades.

Hi, my name's Jessica, and Im a self-care hypocrite. I generally know how to look and feel like my ~best self~, and I even write about it for a living (to summarize: more yoga, less wine, fewer late nights bingeing old episodes of Pretty Little Liars, etc.) But do I do those things? Uh, not always, and especially not latelywhich is why I recently decided to (re)commit to that wellness life and treat my body right...starting by jade-rolling my butt.

Okay, yes, that string of words is nonsensical, so let me explain: Full-body jade rolling is officially A Thing, ever since beauty brand Esker released a supersized, seven-inch Allover Roller this month (think of a classic jade roller, then triple its size. This baby is big). The body tool boasts the same supposed benefits as facial rollerslike better product absorption, less puffiness, general stimulation of the lymphatic systemjust, you know, beefed up for your bigger parts.

When I found out about the launch of this body roller, I was on the brink of un-pausing my Daily Harvest subscription and finally using my Peloton bike as something other than living room decor. It felt like fate; the perfect gratuitous but good-for-you habit to help guide me back to my-body-is-a-temple-level self-care. So, in the name of beauty and a really excellent butt, I set out to roll my entire body for a full week to see if the trend is worth the hype.

For anyone wanting to treat their body like an actual temple, jade is *literally* the way to do itat least, historically speaking. The crystal has been revered as a healing stone in traditional Chinese medicine for approximately 5,000 years. Which also means outside of anecdotal promises, theres currently zero science to prove that repeatedly smushing a carved crystal into your skin will heal you on any level. But its nice to think about, right?

But whether youre a skeptic or a believer, facts are facts, and there may actually be some real, tangible benefits to massaging your body with an XL jade roller, says dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. Its rolling effect may help enhance lymphatic drainage and, in turn, decrease swelling, he tells me. It might also help active ingredients in your skincare products better penetrate your skin when you use them in conjunction with the roller.

Other things it could possibly, maybe, somehow do, according to Dr. Zeichner? Constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling (thanks to the cold temperature of the stone itselfkeep it in your fridge!), and subtly reduce the appearance of cellulite (by breaking apart the fibrous bands that tether fat in place, he says). There are a lot of ifs (and potentially cellulite-free butts?) in that statement, but I was too distracted to focus. As soon as I heard Dr. Zeichner say may, my heart heard definitely will!!! And with that, I set out to jade-roll every last inch of my body.

At seven inches long and three inches wide (heh), the Allover Roller is laughably large. It feels weighty and substantial too, not at all like the flimsy face roller I ordered from Amazon on the cheap. Another major difference: The head of the Xiuyan jade and stainless steel tool isnt smooth, but textured with points and ridges to really get in there.

Eskers founder, Shannon Davenport, tells me the roller is meant to be used post-shower in conjunction with a body oil. After I dry off, I apply a body oil and roll with light-to-medium pressure for about 5 to 10 minutes, she says, adding, I like to do it while Im watching Netflix or the news. Since she kinda invented full-body jade rolling, I trusted her instructions implicitly.

On day one of my experiment, I woke up early to cycle (look at me!), and after 45 minutes, my calves were simultaneously screaming at me and tingling with pre-roller anticipation. Post-bike and post-shower, I oiled up with Eskers Restorative Body Oil (the frankincense-spiked scent is actual Zen in a bottle, but, realistically, you can use any body oil your little heart desires) and got to work.

The key is to roll in the natural direction of the lymph flow, towards the trunk and heart, Davenport says. Put simply: Start at the feet and work your way up using upward strokes. When you get above the heart, switch to downward strokes. Again, no science here, but whateverI was hooked. The heavy jade hurt a little bit as it rolled across my boney shins, but felt ahhhmazing on my fleshier bits: thighs, butt, calves, and even my boobs. I didnt notice any immediate changes on day one, save for a sense of accomplishment. I did it! Self-care! Time to chug a smoothie!

As the week went on, I found myself really looking forward to my rolling sessions, especially as a post-workout treatkind of like a foam-roller session. And while I totally respect Davenports Netflix-and-roll technique, I personally found it easiest to get all my hard-to-reach places while standing.

By day four, I was surprised to find that I did, actually, see a significant improvement in the texture of my skinspecifically, in the texture of my butt. As a writer, I spend a lot of my day sitting down, which is no bueno for the bum, and Im prone to some assne and general roughness. I swear the roller helped smooth things out, if only because I was finally giving my (beautiful) butt the attention it deserves, goddammit.

Toward the end of my experiment, I kind of, sort of thought my thighs and calves looked more toned? Maybe? Ish? But seeing as jade rolling was just one part of my renewed commitment to total wellness, its impossible to say whether my freshly firm muscles were a result of rolling or exercising. (Probably exercising. Almost definitely.)

Alas, I didnt reach my ultimate goal of magically getting a perfectly firm butt or rolling away my cellulite. Not that theres anything wrong with cellulite at all. But when it comes to my own cheeks and thighs, I still find myself tied to the stupid patriarchal notion that the less lumpy they are, the better they look (hey, Im legit trying to break it, but century-old concepts are hard to shake). That being said, Im 100 percent still going to jade-roll my body on the daily, because it straight-up feels good, so theres still hope. (Right? Right?! Ugh, someone prescribe me a self-help book).

I mean, maybe? Depending on what you believe. We have little data showing the true effects of jade rolling, Dr. Zeichner says. However, there is no downside to trying it. In my not-scientific-at-all experience, though, there is an upside. I love how soft and smooth the roller makes my skin feelit really does boost the absorption of my body oil (I think)and if nothing else, the repetitive motion is relaxing enough to give my anxiety-riddled brain a break for a sec.

Honestly, thats probably why jade rolling has stood the test of time. It just feels good. As Davenport says, Stone tools like rollers and gua sha have been used for thousands of years, and I think that is a testament to how great the benefits are. And that, my fellow non-skeptics, is all the data I need.
